Canon's "problems" not alone - make room for Nikon

As everybody knows, Canon's forums are routinely filled with complaints centering on focus and service issues. Without getting into the "it's the camera/it's your technique" argument, I hopped over to the Nikon site to check out the new D800 with it's 36MP sensor and what do you know - lots of focus/service issues. Autofocus doesn't work, service is a joke, and so on. Many are considering switching to Canon. Hah.

Why can't we make a decent DSLR in this country? I'm dreaming that Apple enters the fray with a superb camera, adequately tested before shipping, seamless integration between software and hardware, great service, an elegant package - and expensive.

Honestly, the number of Canon service complaints are relatively small given the large number of cameras they sell.

probably should look more closely at the problems Apple has had, and not really owned up to. The infamous iphone 4 attenna (you're hold it wrong), the yellow cast on displays with the iMacs, the overheating issues with some of the Airs, etc.

Nikon and Canon are making great cameras, with a few faults that drive some crazy. But it's gross overstatement to say neither can build a decent DSLR - they've been leading the revolution.

What would Apple bring to the table? Aside from their own integrated file transfer and raw converter into an itune/iphoto like app, this week's article on Nokia's face picker app is the sort of thing we might expect from them. If they were in the camera game, I think we would have seen the face detection stuff moving faster than it has.

You're living in a dream world. I own Apple products and know many people who do as well. Technology is technology no matter how well designed, and Apple almost lost me with my first iPod giving me the service run around on a clearly defective product.

Life wasn't better when you were a kid. The world isn't going any more to hell in a handbasket now than it was decades ago. There always have been and always will be defective goods, both in design and in manufacture.

Maybe the problem is not the product.

Problems can arise with any product, and will. But how that product is perceived and the attention it receives may have more to do with the noise coming from one or few individuals, and not the reliability or quality of the product itself.

I started in the 50's - my first picture was taken with a Leica and hooked me for life. I no longer use my Leicas, but I am still taking pictures. Some things never change.

Then..... maybe there's the possibility that forums like this attract incompetent whining cry babies that spent a lot of money on a camera that doesn't make them great photographers so they blame the equipment, totally skewing the actual number of possible defects :-).

In fact I'm always amazed and puzzled the way people talk in this forum. They base their numbers and stats on willy-nilly memory counting of things they have read here, never knowing what total sales are, or WHO they are believing. Hell 1 anonymous keyboard warrior can post over and over complaining about focus problems with say a 7D, and I bet after awhile some peoples brains thinks that it was a ton of people having problems :-).

Just my 2 cents on the psychology of this forum. I would never dream of forming opinions based on things I read here. Especially whether a camera model has a problem or not. Although it is sometimes entertaining :-)

DSLR's are complex and need to be made with a very high level of precision. It takes more than an arrogant attitude and a team of people with college degrees to make it happen.

In a nutshell, the reasons we can't make a decent SLR in America are all the same reasons we can't make a decent motorcycle here. You will have to go to Japan, Sweden or Italy for that.

And if you want a great motorcycle you have to go to Germany!

and which only uses AppleCards (toss your CFs and SDs) which can only be read by AppleReaders and only processed on Macs and decides for itself whether each photo should be in color or B&W

the problem is not the camera is the lens system that goes with it.

Kodak were the first to go digital into a Canon body and didn't work out; they didnt have the lenses. Fuji tried too but had to use Nikon mount. Sony had to buy Minolta to get into digital and although have good cameras their lenses system is limited...

How many pros and agencies use Pentax, Sony or Sigma camera?

Would Canon or Nikon develop and ipad? No. it's not their niche...

More like: Sony had to buy Minolta to get into digital and although they have their standard goofy proprietary take on cameras their lenses system is limited...

So now we know what attracted YOU to this forum?

Hell 1 anonymous keyboard warrior can post over and over complaining about focus problems with say a 7D, and I bet after awhile some peoples brains thinks that it was a ton of people having problems :-).
Let's see... you're betting on the same anecdotal observations from this forum?

So ... we shouldn't dream of forming any opinion based upon reading your comments? We should simply regard your comments as idle entertainment?

Ahhh look who dropped in to say hi ...riknash the resident 7D cry baby. Have you been whining much lately Rik? :-)

That is laughable! canon and nikon are japanese companies with nikon being owned by mitsubishi. Their dSLRs are made in japan, china, and thailand. None are made in "this country" which is the U.S. since that's where you live!

LOL !! Hello fellow resident! Have you bullied, berated and insulted anyone else today? Oh I see you still haven't learned how to be polite and play nice! Calling forum participants who have technical challenges with their Canon photographic equipment names that originated from the elementary schoolyard will bring you much respect.

the 7D does have a focus problem While there are plenty of good ones, the fact remains that there are TNTC complaints and documented cases of bad AF with the 7D. I am one such case with the documentation to back it up. While Canon agrees that mine can't focus, I still do not have a working 7D and their horrible customer service is mind blowing. The only reason I am still dealing with the idiot sat Canon is so that I can sell the camera as I refuse to sell broken gear. Just because you have no problems with your, does not mean the complaint out there are not real. The fact that you refuse to acknowledge these cases says a lot...just wait till you have similar issues and no one believes you.

as you tend to do, way too much shooting from the hip RF.

He's saying there are problems with C/N, why can't a company here make/manufacture a good camera. A new company or current company making a better camera than C/N.

Use your head before you insult someone.

Yes, that jumped out at me too! It should be "why can't we GET a decent DSLR in this country?"

But of course the answer is that we can. Considering the tens of thousands of units sold, and the experience/skill level of many who buy and use them, the number of complaints about Nikon and Canon cameras is low.
