Sound from OM-D

I just got an OM-D and have been pouring over the book, CD and forums. I have also been pushing a lot of buttons. I now have a white noise sound coming from the comera in all modes except video. I think the sound started after I used the red video button while in P mode (but I am not sure). Now any time the camera is active the sound is hissing away. Any help at silencing my camera???

Well... I think I need to go back to my film days. I did not notice the sound at first so if it it normal... So be it. I have had several point and shoot digitals but this one is intend to replace my OM-1, for more serious ; Q shooting. I think the learning curve will be a bit steep at first.

Thanks for indulging a newb.

I have not heard a good explaination of where the sound is generated from on the IBIS system. It does sound like a cooling fan running. If the IBIS is some kind of magnetic field device "floating" the sensor, not sure how that makes any sound at all.

I tried turning off IBIS in the camera...but I still get the sound upon power on and wake from sleep and while shooting images but I definitely can tell there is no stabilization occurring through the LCD or EVF.

Shouldn't the sound dissappear if it's coming off IBIS when that is turned off?

I haven't heard it but I'd imagine it's the same way that electrical transformers or power supplies can make a humming type noise. If it uses magnets then the way they do it is most likely causing the hum.

My OM-D makes a distinct "seashell next to ear" kind of white noise. My Canon older OIS lens make a whirring sound which I believe relates to a miniature gyroscopic device spinning up to detect the g-forces in the 2-axis being stabilized.

Maybe the mag-field system in the OM-D needs to be running just to keep the sensor correctly positioned even when you're not asking it to adjust for body motions...thus it must always be on making the sound regardless of image stabilization effect settings. If so, pity...was hoping to gain some longer battery life by powering it off when not needed.

If you observe the sensor with power off, you will notice that it "floats". That is to say that as you tilt the camera one way or another, the sensor will slide left and right and up and down due to the effect of gravity.

Due to this, anytime the camera is operating, the sensor must be positioned by an active control system, regardless of the state of the IS switch.

Due to the basic design of this system, the sensor control system burns power anytime the camera is turned on. In fact, if you listen very carefully when in movie mode, you will hear a similar noise, although at a smaller amplitude.

Yes. You got it right. The sensor is held in place with electromagnets. They have to be on all the time just to keep the sensor correctly positioned.

I bet it is. You just cannot get 8 fps from the same TruePic VI processor which gives 5.5 fps in E-P3 without some active cooling. "Sound from IBIS" is just a BS some sales guy blabbered when he did not know what to answer, and it gets repeated over and over.

It only does 3 fps on the E-P3 :-(

Sorry, but you don't know what you are talking about. See here under "Image Stabilization" for example:

DPR says 5.5, with focus/exposure locked obviously.

Could not care less. They did not disassemble it - they don't really know.

Well, that's wrong. The E-PL3 does 5.5, the E-P3 does 3.

They do since, unlike you, they did their homework. Here's the official response from those who did not have to disassemble the camera to find out since they designed and assembled it in the first place:

As to your own speculations you are right though. The rest of us couldn't care less about them.

You are right. Even more of the difference then.

No, this is BS from a guy who never even saw the engineers who designed and developed the camera.

Sure. Olympus tech reps are consciously lying to prevent the word spreading about the active cooling of their TruePic VI processor. It's all a huge conspiracy just like the rumor that the world is round rather than flat. ;)
