Your theme for Challenge #186 is "Ell Composition." Significant elements in the picture should work together to guide the viewer's eye through an L-shaped path.

Of course the L can be in any orientation -- left, right, upside down, on its back, or on its face. In fact, you're also free to shoot your entry pics while sitting, reclining, leaning, or prone. :)

Looking through my own photo files made me aware how little I've used the ell in framing shots, and the need to give this aspect of composition more attention.

A helpful and concise description of L-Composition is available here:

http://www.learn2paint.info/composition/l-composition

The competition runs from now, June 7, 2012 to 9pm (GMT) on Monday, June 18, 2012. At that time the galleries will be closed and the voting will commence with a new thread.

Voting period is from 9pm (2100) GMT June 18th to 9 pm (2100) GMT June 20th.

The winner in the competition gallery normally hosts the following challenge.

Newcomers are totally welcome and encouraged to join the fun. Just post here if you need assistance to get images into the gallery or if you are not certain what's going on. We all started off clueless and make the same mistakes.

To post a photo in any of the galleries, just select the gallery of choice:

Competition, or Exhibition, or Originals. On the top of the page you will see "edit this gallery", click on that and it will ask for a password. Enter "kickass" (don't ask, just keep it lower case) and you should be able to make it from there. If you still need assistance, ask and you shall be answered. More often than not, the answer is even the right one!

Add your forum name after your entry's title (makes voting easier). To make image sizes manageable, we need to max out at 750 pixels square, which is still more pixels than the usual 800x600. And please observe the files size max of 200kb. Pbase hosts our challenges at no cost to us, so please respect this generosity by keeping your file size reasonable. Finally, ensure the EXIF data is intact for the competition, with the date it was taken.

Starting gallery - contains the other galleries and a link to the general rules:

Competition gallery - for pictures taken to the theme with a 4/3 or µ4/3 camera, during the entry period June 7 -June 18:

Exhibition gallery - for pictures taken to the theme at any time, with any camera:

Originals gallery - if you want to show how the original photo looked before you modified it:

If your clock doesn't show GMT, here is the time calculator found by Catman:

May the creative juices unleashed in our last outing, "Abstract," continue to flow!

Give 'em 'ell! :)

Zin,

Everything looks to be in the proper place - just like an old pro!

Congrats and thanks for taking over the moderation!

I love how you highlighted the galleries. I don't have a clue how you did that because I've never taken the time to figure that cool stuff out. I just type. HA!

The theme sounds like a great one too! I'm going to have to do some digging and see if I just happened to get a 'L' framed shot unconciously. I really like the theme. I'm always up for rethinking my shots. Thanks also for the link!

Congrats on that 3rd place too. That was such a cool abstract.

You're half-right. :)

Thanks for your quick and clear directions, the set-up was easy. But finding three placeholder example shots in my files exhausted my supply of L-comps. Time to restock.

Just type an asterisk * immediately (no space) before and after the word(s) you want to appear in boldface . By the same method, but using forward slashes / you can make the words appear in italics.

Your link in "Abstract" write-up was a good example; a link is much simpler than trying to come up with an original description.
Congrats on that 3rd place too. That was such a cool abstract.
Thanks. It was fortunate that a thin, puffy cloud cover gave the tubes an interesting textured look. Below is a view from the opposite side, shot in Seattle's waterfront sculpture park. Kinda-sorta an ellish composition. :)

I'm pretty sure I've never used this idea when composing a shot so I'll have to look and see if I've ever done it without thinking (which is something I do a lot of)

By the way, I think the introductory text which gets copied and pasted from one challenge to the next may need a bit of editing next time round since it refers to 750 by 750 pixel shots implying that the entries should be square (this probably originated from one of the challenges where they did have to be square). I'm guessing that you didn't intend that here but it might be confusing to anybody who's new to these challenges.

Congratulations on your fine entry in the previous challenge, by the way

Cheers

Yeah, that seemed a little odd to me, too. I was eager to move ahead with posting the challenge, so I interpreted it to mean not dimensions but total, as in 750 x 750 = 562,500 total, vs the 800 x 600 calculation, which yields 480,000 total. In other words, entries could be dimensions which don't exceed the 562,500, e.g., 800 x 700.

I may be wrong on that, but someone will clarify; this is a helpful group. And of course you're right, it should be tweaked for clarity.

Three El's in exhibition. Zander, Zin, zoo, zilch photos with zed excepting switchtracks on railway lines. This one though has opened my eyes, had a look in the last six months worth of images and lots of L material to choose from.

I'll use that when needed. I really think it helps the links to the galleries show up much better.

I can't believe those reflections were natural. I thought for sure you had added them. Now I'm even more impressed with the shot. I already was crazy about it.

Oh, and before I forget, I added a shot in exhibition early this morning.

hrmm, shouldn't be too difficult to find clouds when in Seattle.. but puffy cloud, that seems rare... :-)

One in comp BTW,

That's part of "Little Norway" (village of Poulsbo) across the bay from our place. This evening's rainbow show makes up for the Vikingfest fireworks we missed on May 17, skipped this year due to the city's tight budget.

Sorry about the Vikingfest, not even Microsoftland is immune to economic downturns.

And a good lightening or rainbow show can make up for anything manmade.

Looked up Poulsbo, it doesn't seem to be on the path to Victoria that we take today. Havent even been in Bullard for lutefisk. But what is lutefisk compared to freshly picked King Salmon anyway.

So glad you could step in; when Collin's away the kids will play :D.

I am not entirely convinced that the "ell" is a particularly artistic compositional tool, but I'm (a) happy to experiment, (b) happy to be proven wrong ;).
I slipped one into the comp, just to test the waters.
