I don't have much money so I don't have many options.

I am stuck between the Nikon D5100, D5000, D3100 and the D3000.

Any suggestions????

Can you provide the forum with how you wish to use the camera, what your goal is, and maybe some of your preferences and expectations?

The cameras you list are not that different but knowing what you think you want is helpful.

I mostly do portraits and landscape.
I will use it very often, I wand to eventually open my own business.

So far I have been free lancing. I have done two weddings, and some senior pictures.

I just want a good quality camera that will last and is good for someone starting out on a budget.

At least a used D90. It supports Nikon CLS commander mode.

I am horrified to hear that you did two weddings while you apparently lack the knowledge to know what cameras are suitable for paid work. It begs the question what equipment you used for those jobs.

Don't do more paid work until you gain considerably more knowledge. It's grossly irresponsible towards clients who depend on you.

Stephen is right... and I know this because I had a similar discussion with him just the other day.

Start out doing favors for people (important events aren't a good idea), and practice with what you have or one of the cameras you listed. You've got a long way to go, just like I do. To be a professional requires the skill, knowledge, equipment, and personality of a professional. You have to fully invest yourself, and lots of money, into being a photographer.

Try it out as a hobby, have some fun with it. But take Stephen's advice and don't risk your reputation quite yet. If you do a wedding and blow it (very easy...) everyone will hear about it from your client. You could even get sued for not delivering an acceptable product.

No, it doesn't beg the question. It raises the question. Begging the question is a logical fallacy in which the premise presupposes the conclusion, resulting in circular reasoning. For example, "God created the Earth because the Bible says so", that is an example of begging the question.

Hi Cassie {again!} I applaud you for wanting to take up photography for a living. Persue your dreams while you are young I say. Could you tell us how the wedding shoots went? I believe they are one of if not the most demanding disciplines in photography. Do you have any pics that you could show us, to get a feel of your style? As far as equipment goes, & I am only a beginner myself, I feel it would be difficult to do paid work on a shoestring. If this is your ambittion, then you owe it to your future clients & yourself to use the best tools for the job. I made a living doing joinery {carpentry} & buying the best quallity tools was a must. As I mentioned in your thread in Open Talk, considder better equipment used. But even the best tools need to be used correctly & with both carpentry & photography, it takes time to gain the experience to do paid work to an acceptable standard. By all means buy your equipment, but take your time learning. Dont be intoo much of a rush to go self employed, believe me, wherever you live, its a difficult way to make a living especially in the current financial climate. Forgive me if I sound a bit negative, but these are the hard facts. lee uk

Who talked about built-in flash?

These camera are purposely handicapped in the flash department so to need more expensive flash guns in order to get flash commander and limiting the fill flash to X-Sync.

Umm first of all I never said I charged money!!!
And they were my brothers weddings.

And I used a different camera. Yeah, I don't know a lot about the hardware of a camera, but I do know how to use one thank you!

I guess no one is getting the point of my question.

I just want to know which camera would be best for me when I don't have a lot of money. I have looked at reviews that had negative things on all of them so I just wanted to know what people thought about the camera, not about my photography.

Thank you to those of you who said it in a nice way that I am a beginner.

I never said I was a professional, I said one day I want to be. I just want a camera that I can take my personal photos with, not do professional work, sorry if I confused you.

Really, all I want to know is what kind of camera should I start with. Please take into consideration, that I do know how to work it.

You said you were doing weddings, senior portraits, and freelance work. It just made it sound like you were selling a service.

Do you have a DSLR now? If not you could start with any of those mentioned or any canon DSLR. Once you've learned the basics and spent some time with the camera you can get some better lenses and other stuff. If you plan on doing professional work later these cameras will not cut it and you will have to upgrade.

All four are good enough to get started with. The D3000 is the oldest, with the most limitations; it's the only one that cannot shoot video, and does not have Live View either. It's been discontinued awhile, so unless you have a local store selling one with a kit lens very cheap, it's not worth buying. Same story with the D5000; it has been out of production awhile, so unless you find it somewhere much cheaper than the D5100, it's not worth buying.

Between the newer D3100 and D5100 are features that may or may not be important to you. The D5100 is a technically superior camera, but perhaps not enough to make a difference to your situation. Since you don't have a lot of money, but the cheaper D3100. As you become a more proficient photographer, you can always upgrade later on; a professional would never be shooting with any of these models anyway.

The two statements are to some extent mutually exclusive. You must understand something about the way the hardware works in order to understand how to get the best from it. The details are very important. The more you understand the more you can achieve.

Assuming you're interested in learning (more?) technique and extending your abilities then I'd still recommend something like a used D90 with an 18-105VR and perhaps a cheap used 50mm f1.8D ( the newer 50 1.8 G being better but more expensive and you did have a small budget ).

In this forum, we have a few guys who take "pro" income work idea very seriously in terms of delivering professional, consistent quality. They get very upset and irritated when someone who's just starting says they are already charging for work when they don't know the difference between a 3100 and a 90.

So don't mention pro work in the same sentence as asking about these cams.

There are haves and have nots - I am a have not. Have not a lot of money.

Every camera has positives and negatives. All of them. They are compromises. If they are too cheap they miss too many features. If they are really full of features, they become too expensive, big and bulky.

If have half a mind to earn some money in the long term and have a body that has pro-ish features and a robust body, then the D90.
Really, all I want to know is what kind of camera should I start with. Please take into consideration, that I do know how to work it.
Please don't say that. If you know how to work a camera, you would clearly know the difference between a D3000 and a D5100. I don't have any Nikons (except a point and shoot one from year 2000) and even I know the difference.

'Enjoy Diversity - Live a Little or a Lot'

Okay, I guess I am not explaining myself very well.

I know the differences between the cameras, I know that the D5100 should be the best, why I ask was because I saw reviews that people hated it and would rather stick with a D3100.

I don't know why I even came on here because no one has helped me.

I do not care what your opinion is about my skills.

And once again I didn't charge for the freaking wedding.
