I recently plumped for a Canon 17-55 2.8, to be used as an indoor lens and portrait lens on my 60D. I ordered it from B&H and it arrived next day. The lens does seem to have a tendency to front focus, so I called B&H customer service, and without hesitation, a new lens was on its way.

It arrived today, and this one is worse than the first, a distinct front focus on most shots, and seems softer wide open. Looks like I will be sticking with the first lens after all. Kudos to B&H for their excellent after sales service.

I wouldn't settle on the first. Ask for another or send it to Canon to get it right.

That's why it's better to buy from a real store to test it. It's worth the extra money to get a very good sample.

Did you try to micro adjust the camera for the lens? If it's not horribly off you can adjust the camera so it will come in sharp and clear. Of my 6 lenses only one didn't benefit from some degree of micro adjust to reach it's best performance.

B&H has always been great as has Adorama imo. Another place I wouldn't hesitate to do business with is KEH. They are top notch. I recently bought a 400 5.6L from them to use handholding for birds. Guess age is starting to catch up to me and I'm not steady enough anymore for that lens, especially with no IS so I called them and sent it back. They were great about it. They often have both new and used items and their grading system is really good. I always look there when I'm thinking of getting something.

Lol, B&H is probably the largest camera store in the world @ 70,000 sq ft!

All products from every manufacturer that ever existed has had defects; nothing's perfect, including Rolls Royce.

And if you read his post, they swapped it out immediately! I had to return a camera with them, and they paid return shipping too, got the replacement the next day ...they're awesome.

If you're ever in NYC, you gotta go there; it'll make you drool.

for whatever it's worth...when I returned what appeared to be a defective Canon 1.4 TC recently to B&H the gent I spoke to before mailing it back wanted to know if I wanted a replacement... I said no... and he refused to pay the return shipping charges...I thought that odd having known their reputation and my dealings with them in the past.. I just paid it ..but it sure left me with bad vibes over a lousy $14 bucks

never had that trouble in dealing with Amazon and their 30 day no questions asked return policy...

my Canon 60d sure beats using that ol' Petri 7s

I try not to do business with companies that have such idiotic policies. It forces those of us who aren't buying on trial to pay the costs associated with those who do. It also aggravates the temptation for retailers to repackage items previously sold and to resell them as new. Personally, I think sellers should offer a discount to those of us who agree not to return a product except for exchange.

I take it then...that you do not deal with ANY companies..as ALL have return policies of some sort whether it be online or brick and mortar... 14 days.. 30 days.. 90 days... nice try trying to be melodramatic and goody goody...but it's not 'idiotic' as you state by any stretch.. this is today's real world...and the consumer has to be protected.. so that means if you get a 'bad copy' of a lens or for that matter anything.. you would not send it back but eat it... I think not... like I said nice try

This has nothing to do with consumer protection. It's the result of companies being compelled to compete in a market that includes large numbers of the lowest common denominator, i.e. stupid people. I'm not the first to complain about the cost of these policies to the rest of us. The fact is, if an individual buys something by mistake, no one but that purchaser should bear the expense of returning it as a now-used product.

Thought it might be third time lucky, but the third lens that B&H sent me is also front focusing on my 60D. I guess it must be the camera body, so it looks like its going back to Canon for a third time to get calibrated to the 17-55 lens.

Why oh why do Canon not include the MFA feature on the 60D, it would save so much frustration. This has spoiled my enjoyment of this camera
