Just curious to find out if the higher end series LX only is made in Japan. My LX5 says "Made in Japan" What about the FZ series?

Kind of an interesting question and I think the answer is it depends...

And you wonder how Panasonic decides where to manufacture things...is it quality or capacity or something else? My guess is it is capacity and redundancy (whether by choice or accident since the Panasonic camera factory is in Fukushima). There is probably some built in Japan on purpose for Japanese domestic preferences...for example, GH2 are made in both China and Japan, and those models sold in Japan seem to be made in Japan.

My GH1 is made Japan, but it is one of the later production runs, manufactured in January 2011. The very earliest GH1s, especially the review models, were made in China. As were the G1 and G2...

Certain models, such as the G10 and G3 seem to be made exclusively in China, but they are more on the budget side of the line. Curiously, all the GF2 and GF3 that I have seen are made in Japan, yet they are on the budget side of the line for sure...maybe it is the miniaturization factor...who knows!?

Well at least my LX5 says made in Japan! (yes I am a snob)

I own 2 Lumix one FS-15, that says made in China, and a ZS-8 made in Japan. I wonder if their Leica Lenses are made in Japan. Panasonic states that all therirLeica lenses are designed by Leica but made in Japan to their specifications, I wonder if this is true.

My ZS20 is made in Japan, and on the box it says, quote: "The Leica CD lenses are manufactured using measurement instruments and quality assurance systems that have been certified by Leica Camera AG based on the company's quality standards."

Cheers,

Yes I did come across information that the Leica lenses in all Panny's are manufactured under strict quality control in Japan.

It is my understanding that the Leica Lens for the Japanese Leica's are made in Japan, by techs who have been specially trained to work on Leica Lens...

Pany Cameras I own/ owned:

Made in Japan:
FZ150
FZ200
FZ1000

Made in China:
ZS50
FZ80
LX100

Later models of the FZ200 made in China; Graham Houghton did a YouTube comparison between the FZ200/ Japan & FZ200/ China HERE.

From reviews I've read following current Lumix compact cameras are made in China:
FZ200
FZ300
LX100 II
LX10

Relatively easy to find out where camera made just buy doing a Google search on a camera. ;-)

Cheers,
Jon

I believe that most (all?) Panasonic lenses and cameras are now made in China. Even my G9 and G95 were made in China. In addition, all of my Panny lenses were made in China including my PL 50-200mm and my PL 12-60mm. On the other hand, my Olympus 12-200mm lens was made in Japan.

Regards, Dave

my wife has 2 of those.

The TZ11 is made in Japan, the FZ300 is made in China.

I think that's a myth. I doubt that there is any Leica involvement in the design or manufacture of Lumix 'Leica' lenses, apart from collecting a royalty for the use of the name.

What about Zeiss and Sony then. What are your thoughts on that?

I don't think the FZ200 is made anywhere these days. But the later specimen were reported to be "Made in China". Mine is apparently older.

There are somewhat conflicting statements in this thread that may partially be due to some of its posts being made in 2012 and others in 2020. An 8-year gap can account for quite a bit. Some threads make less sense to resuscitate than others.

Same thing: I doubt that Zeiss has anything to do with the 'Zeiss' lenses made by Sony, apart from the T* coating they use. Zeiss doesn't design, make or quality control them, just like the 'Leica' lenses on Lumix cameras. It's just a branding.

The supposedly Zeiss lenses on Sony RX cameras are made in the same Chinese factories as the cameras. Some of the interchangeable Zony lenses are made in Sony's Thai camera factories. In fact, Zeiss itself doesn't actually make lenses for still cameras any more, and probably knows less about this sort of lens than Sony does.

Indeed, I think that partnership may even be over. All of the premium new Sony E-mount lenses are now branded G or G Master, not Zeiss. This is Sony's own premium lens brand, going back to Minolta.

These lenses are generally superior to the slightly older 'Zeiss' branded lenses. For example, the new 16-55 G APS-C Sony lens is superior to the old 16-70 Zony lens (which I own), which it effectively replaces. Even the cheaper 18-135 Sony lens beats the expensive 'Zeiss' model.

The new 16-35/2.8 GM FF lens is twice the price, and much better than, the older 16-35/4.0 'Zeiss' lens. The existing Zony lenses remain on sale, but it looks like there won't be any new ones, and they're increasingly being superseded by better Sony G and GM lenses.
