After a second day or two with the Canon G1X, I'm getting a better feel for it as a general day-to-day use camera. It's becoming more intuitive to use and I think perhaps that it was hard to forget that this isn't a G11 or a G12.

As a general "walkabout" camera, it's excellent and you'll be hard pressed to take a bad picture with it when shooting building exteriors or interiors or landscapes. Portraits should be fairly easy. Moving pets perhaps not so easy - but possible. It's nicely balanced and I don't think it feels heavy or even too light. It's easy to feel confident using it although it may help to target a brightly lit subject area before recomposing the shot as it may sometimes blow out extremely bright highlights. Something I usually do is knock down the exposure bracketing by -1.

In P-Mode, it works just fine and I have no doubt that it can perform admirably with Auto mode engaged for those new to the Powershot range of cameras. Having access to full manual control allows you to quickly select a faster shutter speed to avoid blurred subjects. I would have preferred to have the ISO dial left where the Exposure Compensation dial is presently located. Most people tend to set their exposure setting and leave it there.

I was hoping to see a lot of G1X threads with samples of other people's handiwork but so far there's not many posts. Please post them when possible... a lot of us would love to see what you see.

Some pics I took since yesterday afternoon....

From the Canon s95 - A look at the larger G1X lens. It's a beefy camera without being too large. Nowhere near the size of a DSLR with the same sized sensor.

Still fits in the palm of your hand - For portability, it still holds out nicely. Again, from the Canon s95.

--Beautiful examples of what the cam can do.

It fits into most of my jacket pockets...yay ! I have a feeling I'l use this cam more than my other ones. :)

Even tried the 6/sec mode, and also the hdr. No probs.

I love the cat pics....Mauii appears to be an experienced model. BEAUTIFUL! Your pictures make me very excited to get mine. Looks like another 3 weeks wait.

Hi Marco,

Thanks for all the photos you are posting. I'm thinking more and more to buy G1X as my next camera.

Moris

Marco can make any camera in his hands shine as he proved so many times.
G1X is no exception.

Cheers

AWWW... those kitty pics are wonderful ! Especially the last one of Mauii in the very pensive pose. The lighting is lovely. I also think the shot of the courthouse shot one-handed is a great grab ! And I (probably most of anyone) appreciated the "in -hand" pictures of the camera and close ups of the hand-grip ! :-) Thanks for all this, as well as for all your contributions on the various G1X threads we are all hovering over !

Cheers.... waiting for more samples !

I was the biggest critic for a long while but finally a man who can use a camera!!! no offense against the other photogs. You have made me def change my tune about this camera as your pics are quite impressive. Keep posting more details, they are always welcome.

Thank you

M

Sure, he has the best G1X pics we have seen. Most, but not all, of the others are lousy. It might indicate that the photographer is (almost) more important than the camera when looking at the pics quality. Unless you have flaws (like orbs), or you go to images with very large size, you will not make a difference between good cameras.

But where the G1X should shine is at high ISO. I wish G1X owners would show more high quality, high ISO photos. For most outside shots, I agree, there is not much difference between good cameras.

Here's an ISO 1600 I took of a lens hand held ... cropped and slightly sharpened.

Thank you Marco!

Your real life review was very useful.

I bought the PowerShot G1X yesterday.

I posted 2 photographies from my new camera

in the galley!

Thank you again.

Peter.

The G1-X can produce some migty nice images in the right hands. That S95 proves it's no slouch either. I'm still impressed with it's capabilities. I'll probably add the G1-X down the road.

Love the cat photos. I had to put down a dear friend of 15 years recently, and miss him a lot.

Here's a photo of him years ago taken with a Sony floppy disk Mavica FD-7. He was very playful.

It is great that the same photographer (Marco) has a current series on G1 X and another on S95, so we can really see the truth of your statement.

I have not outgrown the S95, and until I do I don't see the point of moving up. I also enjoy the challenge of working within its occasional limitations.

Gail wonders why we don't see more high ISO G1 X samples. Perhaps the reason, is that you have to seek rather extreme conditions to require the high ISO (based on the examples we have seen). The G1 X interior shots on the forum are mostly ISO 200-800. One more generation of the S/G series should make 800-1600 quite acceptable.

Marco...

I think I read on one or another of the numerous reviews and threads about the G1X, that the back wheel projects slightly more above the func/set arrows button than on the G12? Can you confirm or comment on that ? I know on my SX40 that is true, and it is MUCH better re: setting things you want rather than activating "macro" or some other setting while you are fumbling around !

Thanks... carolyn

I haven't personally seen any outside photos that knock my socks off compared to outside photos taken with S series cameras. Don't misunderstand me, I've seen great outside photos taken with the G1X; just not a vast difference in image quality when there us some reduction in size and images are post processed well.

Hope I've explained myself okay.

I agree. The G1 X outside photos don't seem to offer much beyond the S100.

The G1 X comes into its own at ISO 1600 and up, which, judging by the examples folks have posted, represents a minor fraction of normal shooting situatioins. You need a pretty dark environment to need ISO's that high. Bottom line: S-series covers the normal range admirably

Hi carolyn,

The wheel DOES extrude past the surface of the camera and past the interior dial that sits within the wheel. The interior disc is recessed slightly. The Fuction button (in the center) sticks out slightly. It's a considerable improvement over the G11 that I have... and I would often press the wrong button by accident when handling the G11.

Will try and post a picture for you later this evening.

Cheers,

Marco

Thanks Marco - It sounds like the wheel interior dial on the SX40, with raised wheel, recessed inner disc, and raised shiny set button. That woks a LOT better than the one on the G12. I have small hands / fingers, and I can't figure out how a many could work the rather sunken (or at least not raised) wheel on the G12 and older G's.

Cheers ! carolyn
