Night X10

The latest firmware has seen great improvements in the low light capability of the x10, this applies to the EXR SN and Advanced Pro Low light modes particularly in black and white.

It’s a lot of fun roaming around on a hot night with a small camera snapping away. These are all hand held.

The exif data is retained within the images, thank you for looking. :) The X10 modes used to shoot these images are shown on the X10 Mode Chart Beta 2.1, found in the DPReview user article here: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/9311974549/getting-the-best-out-of-the-fujifilm-x10

Wow. Thanks Max. I just got my X10 a few days ago and these are very informative for me as I learn what this camera can do. I'll spend some time with your X10 article on DPR too. I'll get out and do some B&W at night!

Gary

The low light, B&W capabilities of this camera continue to impress me for a small sensor camera, or any camera, really.

Nice shots, Max. I'm also impressed with your hand-held abilities!

Tom

That's a nice series, Max; thanks. And you must have very calm hands ... ;-)

Btw: I love the first picture! It looks somehow surreal to me ... cannot explain it ... but I definitely love it.

"Hot nights"?? Gee ... I'm living on the wrong hemishpere ... ;-)

Cheers,
Kurt

Well, I think it's a brilliant night shot camera but what do I know? This would be nothing but noise and blur with my MFT or FT kit. 30 yards from the nearest street light.

Great B&W series and most interesting and creative. I enjoy these very much.

Kindest regards mate,

Thanks Gary, shooting at night is heaps of fun, if there is a reasonable amount of low light (like dusk) the one shot EXR SN mode is the best after that use the Advanced Pro Low Light. Hope you have as much fun with the camera as I do. Congratulations on your new camera and my very best to you. :-)

Alfa, there is a sun-star on the front-most street light of your shot. Should this be happening at F2.0?

I wonder what noise-reduction and sharpening do you folks use?

Thanks Tom, ok handheld images using iso3200 with a small 2/3 sensor is hard to beat in any brand, this little camera is heaps of fun. Enjoy the the weekend mate. :-)

Thanks Kurt, it can stay pretty hot here at night in the summer which can make sleep a little difficult, the little x10 makes for a fun night roaming tool at those times.

To get the low shutter speeds I hold the camera like binoculars with the left hand, thumb under the camera index finger running along the top - makes quite a difference, I learnt to do this with dslrs a while back. My very best to you mate. :-)

That's a lovely frame alfa, very nice composition and ambiance. Your dead right about the low light capability of the x10, no other camera below aspc touches it, even then it will hold its own with many of them. As long as we are having lots of fun with our x10's, nothing else matters. lol Enjoy the weekend mate. :-)

Thanks Gary, night photography can be like doing a shoot on another planet, the world changes when Nightfall throws his cape over the ball, having a small camera that is usable then is a boon. My very best to you and Betty mate. :-)

Don't know about anyone else Timur, I don't use any noise reduction in camera or during post processing with a small sensor - I prefer the extra detail. The x10 in Advanced Pro Low Light dictates the JPEG settings so I live with that but apply no noise reduction thereafter. Kind regards mate. :-)

Thanks tropicalsun! :D That’s a very nice handle you’re using, kindest regards. :D
