A bucket of G1X Snaps

Greg,

Did you use i-contrast with these shots? I wonder if i-contrast adds noise, as it seems to when I use it.

P mode allows me to have most of the control I want.

Do not underestimate the full AUTO mode as I used it in some indoor images and it was amazing. The larger sensor holds up well even in the 800 ISO range.

The only additional thing I could ask is that the lens have the retractable cover!! I hate the lens caps that comes with the G1X as it is the pinch type and my fingers and hands are larger and it is not that easy to do. I prefer the cap release to be on the outside edges not inside on the front.

Greg - I ordered a couple of extra regular "outside pinch release" Canon lens caps for my SX40 for the same reason you mention, (except that I have small hands !), and they are great. Just like the regular dSLR lens caps. Do you know what lens cap mm size the G1X takes ? I am hoping to do the same when I get my G1X. It doesn't bother me at all to pop off the lens cap and stick it in my pocket. After 30+ years of SLR and dSLR shooting, it is an automatic thing for me to do, as I can't stand those dangling lens caps that are always in the way !

I got to have a larger sensor. While Nikon wins for quality for a small quality and speed, I need a little less DOF. When Nikon delivers faster lenses for this system, I will look again.

I agree that the larger sensor is a priority for some. For me, speed and focus accuracy are what I'm looking for in a compact camera. Hope the day comes soon when we can have them coupled with a large sensor.

You make good observations. I also note that you have used many cameras and so your opinion matters.

I too have used many, far too many in fact! I am looking for a camera that I will have with me 90% of time and one that has good image potential(I like to work pictures in several programs for black and white etc) so this camera interests me. I have used G11, 12 and liked many things about them, save for the ovf and some sluggishnes...oh yes, and the noise. No question that this camera improves on those things.

I am now deciding between G1x, GX1(with evf), Pentax K-01 and getting either the C-3 or the 5n with evf.

The pics you posted do show great promise for the G1X, my initial feedback aside.

Thanks for sharing and offering your take.
these pictures seem to lack sharpness and contrast that may or may not be remedied in processing. That's not to say that they don't look good when considered against output of the G12/S100 sort of cameras.

The ovf would be the largest issue for me, lens cap aside.

I hate to be one of those "if only" people, but, if only they improved the ovf by giving a decent evf, and secondly, made it with an outstanding fixed lens like the X100(or interchangeable for that matter) it would be a better camera. As it is, it's a super-G12, and no more than that. That's not a bad thing for G12/S100 crowd.

A "Super G12" is a pretty good comparison. I do think the improvements are worth the cost. Please do not let my lack of post processing take away from the camera. I really tried to keep it very close to what comes out of the camera. I compressed these very little and they total about 30-40MB.

I agree on the EVF, I love my EVF on the Nex7 but still find myself using the rear LCD in good conditions. As good as EVF can be they still lack a lot to me compared to a DSLR.

Greg... would you please let me know what you find out re: size of the lens cap.

I was kind of wondering if the 58mm ones I ordered for my SX40 would be the same size as G1X ? I can't find anything about G1X size other than the filter adapter which is Canon FA-DC58C FILTER ADAPTER f/G1X (B&H) . Do you suppose the "DC58C" designation might mean 58 mm for the lens cap too? Educate me here !

Also... unrelated, but can you speak to the hand grip? Does it project enough to give the four fingers more to hang on to than the G12 or other "flat" cameras ? I need more projection due to some joint surgery in my thumb, so that my thumb doesn't take so much pressure to hold the camera.

EDIT.... I just checked and I think the lens caps I got for the SX40 are 52 mm. So if you get this figured out for the G1X, keep me in the loop.... carolyn

i need to get home and see if when my G1X lens retracts, could I get HOLD of the edge release on the cap. This just occured to me as the lens goes into the camera enough that this might be difficult.

I will let you know, tonight!

Is the grip composed of a rubber compound?
In otherwords, is it squeezably soft?
Or hard?

I have arthritis in my fingers and thumb that makes it sometimes difficult to grip hard surfaces.

Thanks.

Like others here, I suffer from chronic GAS.
Gear Acquisition Syndrome.
a few hundred nautical miles SW : 17º 52S, 149º 56W

Feels like the same materila they use on the DSLRs and has a rubbery feel. Very "grippy".

The inside of the lens where the cap attaches looks like it is 45mm. There is more than enough lens still sticking out to attach and detach a edge release cap.

Thanks Greg... any info will be most appreciated. I note from Len_Gee's reply that he also has some problems with grip. I never in my wildest imagination thought I would have thumb basal joint replacement surgery, which actually was totally successful, but I trashed tendons in that area several months later, so I'm having to put aside my 7D and big lenses ,( temporarily I hope), for 6 months to a year, and get acquainted with smaller cameras.

I bought the G12, but find it hard to hold as it is so flat and demands a lot of thumb pressure to oppose the four fingers on the front of the camera. So the more there is to hang onto with those four fingers and some help with palm of the hand, the better it works for me, .... and maybe for Len_Gee too. I didn't realize until this happened, that one's thumb does that particular job.

I bought the SX40, and it has a wonderful grip. I know the G1X won't have that kind of "grip depth", but I'm really hoping it will be better than the G12.

Thanks for any info you can provide !!!

The G1X filter size is certainly not 52mm.

My step-up ring (52-55) doesn't fit it, the ring is bigger. It should be around 48mm, based on my last measurement.

Now I need to find a step up ring from 48 to 52. :(

I own a G1 X and have shot a Nikon 1.

The Nikon is faster than any DSLR at 60 fps and focuses as fast as 99% of them. It's hands-down the fastest camera of any type you can buy today overall. A quantum leap.

If you don't care about the bulk of interchangeable lenses, don't need manual controls and don't need a larger sensor, it's a fantastic option.
Sorry but $800 will not buy DSLR focusing speed.
Not yet, but the Nikon 1 is getting closer to it.

That sounds good... if we can get a 45 mm cap. I checked B&H and Amazon, but don't see one that size. When I got the 52 mm cap for my SX40, it was kind of an experiment that happened to work perfectly !

Thanks for the measurements. You are good for a lot of little trivial information like grips and lens caps that's really important to a few of us, but that nobody else cares about ! :-)

I believe the lens cap for G1 X is a 46mm - B&H sells one. The filter size is 58mm attaching with the filter adapter.

Ah... thanks. Do you know if it will actually work directly on the lens, or does it require an adapter ?
