Im posting the best here. These were all taken between 6:30 and 7 AM this morning, and it was brutally cold so I shot them through a closed window, with my hands propped up on my desk...... all at full zoom (whatever that is on this camera lol)..... manual mode, 1/200 shutter speed, f/5.6 aperture and ISO 400. Looks like the IS works just fine; I even took some at 1/100 (not shown here) that turned out pretty good, but burnt a few highlights.

First two are 16 MP DR 100 , last three are 8 MP DR 400 100% crops.

I think number 2 (second of the 16 MP shots) and number 5 (third of the 8 MP shots) turned out the best. Those are full crops btw..... at 16 MP with a tight crop I can get the moon to completely fill my 1280x1024 monitor screen.

Try these settings - work well for me - spot meter, - EV, 100 ISO, 16 MB

Thanks, did you use Aperture Priority? I cant get Spot metering to give me a decent exposure (not even within 2 EV so I can use the EC dial) so I just go to full manual.

I will save these settings from your header and try them tonight though.

ISO 100, 1/105 sec, f5.6, -1.33 EV

I think setting it to ISO 400 may have been the issue. Can you do a 100% crop of the image you posted and post it here, I just wanted to do a direct comparison. Thanks!

If you go to my gallery you can see the original and magnify.

i think it was aperture priority and I usually use -EV and bracket EV just to be sure I get a good one.

Did you go below the picture and click on "original" ? Then you can make it 100% - at least it works for me.

I can also see "Original" in available sizes. I can send the photo to you in the original size if you want to, and if John doesn't mind, of course.
I also recommend shooting at 100 ISO.
Here are some of my moon shots. I shoot with 8 MP ;)

Thanks, Martin! I was nervous about the IS at the long end of the zoom...... in your experience, whats the longest shutter speed that can be safely (sharply!) hand held at the tele end?

Martin, I cant see your originals, it limits me to large :(

I cant wait until we have a total lunar eclipse, I can only guess what kind of ISO that will require at full zoom lol. The moon will look like a big basketball.

I don't know how really great you are? But seeing that the Man in the Moon is winking at me in one of these images I must now think you are Great! :D

Good job on these Moon Shot for real. I enjoy them. And finally I get to see some of your own images and respond in kind. Marin County, right?

Kind regards and stay out of the rain,

Something weird I just noticed....... in the 16 MP original posted by John, the moon is about 870 pixels wide, and doing some calculations, that seems about right for a 680mm zoom 16 MP cam. Well, when I looked at my own images, my camera seems to make the moon 932 pixels wide...... thats a substantial difference and I dont know why that might be. I know the moon is larger or smaller depending on what part of its orbit its in, but that sounds like a bit too much of a difference for that to be a valid reason.

If you don't see the Original size, and would like to download those photos I can send them to you (but it should be there... at least I have it).

Well, from my experience, you should be safe with 1/125-160 sec (300 and more would best though).. but I shot some photos with 1/60 sec and less (I think) and to me they're pretty sharp, e.g. the two below were shot at 1/60 and 1/80 (with ISO 200):
