have a g3 and 14mm and 25mm lens.. both primes have same lens cap... fed up with taking the lens cap off and putting it in pocket whole time... is there a good way to tie the lens cap to the camera strap so it can just hang down??? there is no latch on the actual lens cap to loop some string through...

Buy a new lens cap? There are lots of third party lens caps out there. Alternatively, you could just tape on a hook with some double sided tape or glue, hit the hobby store near by!

Yes - there are several products out there that do just that.

My favorite (full discloure...because I make it) is the LensCapTrap. There's a new version that is sized correctly for Micro Four Thirds camera lens caps.

It is very simple - die cut hook and loop fastener ("Velcro") and a die-cut plastic carrier that fits over the camera strap without having to take it off to install it. Take a look at the web site to see how it all works.

Check out products like - http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_1&products_id=5987 and the other equivalent options that should be available at pretty much any good photographic retailer.

Basically a cord you can stick to the lens cap (using sticky pads or double sided tape) and then loop over the lens or through the strap lug. When the cap is on the lens it is like normal, when you take it off it just hangs on the strap until you need it again.

I will admit I just stick to the 'stuff the lens cap in your pocket' option, and keep the lenses in padded pouches when not in use - So I can regularly come home with a pocket full of lens caps and a bag full of uncapped but safe lenses.

That IS a pain! I stick mine in a pocket... but then try to remember WHICH pocket? I hate those string things and if you use a bunch of prime lenses, then what?

Here are a couple of things:

A pouch:

A plastic clip thing that you thread onto your camera strap and clip the cap to. I was able to look at it at B&H and looks pretty good. Unfortunately, it doesn't fit on my wide neoprene strap.

Discovered I had some older Nikon lens caps (36.5mm) with a 'lug' for tying them on, so that enabled a good solution. Added a quick disconnect baynet connector to facilitate changes to different sized lens (i.e. lenscaps) and voila ! All works well.

Banger,

Your solution interests me. Where do you get the pieces (from camera lug to snap and from snap to lens cap)?

The pieces of 'cord' are fairly common and should easily be available, (otherwise you could use pretty anything strong enough ....even fishing line !), the bayonet connectors are also common on all sorts of 'snap' straps, however the ones I have come from USB memory sticks that had a neck strap for carrying them around, and are nice and small. (Fortunately I have enough of them to cope with the other m4/3 lenses I'm planning to get.)

Here's my homemade solution from 2006. Some what "McGuyver" but effective nonetheless.

(Replace the "DOT" with the usual...)

Material required - shoe lace, black hair bungee elastic, and some velcro. Good thing is that for an initial investment of about $10 US, you'll have enough for several lens caps.

Just throw it away or hide it until you sell the lens.

Thanks, I've been looking for something like the HUFA for a while!

If you have different sized lens caps, it's no good tethering them to the camera body or camera strap. Best idea for me was to put the elastic part around the body of the lens and the tether then stays with the lens. The loose cap doesn't hang too far below the lens, and can easily be controlled in windy conditions using the focussing hand. I haven't noticed any interference with normal lens usability, and for me, it's best to know where the cap is. I don't care if the Pros snort at this idea.

The Nikon 52mm and 58mm caps don't have any tethering point, so rather than using those unsightly sticky bits, I drilled a 1.5mm hole in the lower "squeezer", inserted the tether and knotted it off. I used a tiny spot of fast-setting glue to make the knot permanent; no glue on the cap itself. The 1.5mm hole is nearly invisible, so doesn't spoil the appearance of the lens cap. They only cost about $20 anyhow.
