That's got BOB the engineer written all over it...
Please enlighten me - why is that a stupid statement? I'm sure the Nikon shareholders would agree with it!
I agree, why is it silly? The D4 IS about Nikon being a serious contender in the professional market. that's what flagship cameras like the D4 are for, trying to replace the "white" lens' on the sidelines of sports, it's called marketshare!

Because its not just about that? (with emphasis on the just ) ;)

The D3s can be spotted all over the place at sporting events. The long lenses, being very expensive, have hung on to their Canon status for many years (too expensive to replace). However, the D3s is EVERYWHERE on a major sporting event - usually with something like a 24-70 attached to it. The long whites are slowly being replaced with long Nikons. Remember, Canon OWNED sports for much of the last 3-7 years.

.

If that were literally true, Nikon would be taking a major loss undertaking D4 development, because there just aren't that many pro sports shooters in existence.

The D4 serves an important purpose as a halo product, as a visible flagship, but the majority of it's sales are not ending up around football fields. This camera is going to be in the hands of a lot of studio photogs, non-sports PJs, but mostly just plain old enthusiasts.

You all missed my point I think...Its not about just sporting events..its a studio, concerts, everyday life and even wildlife camera if you want it to be! :)

Not sure of the pricing model in other countries, but here in SA Canon long lens prices have generally been much lower than Nikon's. You could get a 500 IS with a 7D or even a 5D for the same price as a Nikon 500VR. Hence all the white lenses in the game parks and at the sports fields.

However, the new Canon 500 and 600 lenses are around 20% more expensive than the Nion equivalent, so things may change.

Yes, Canon's lens releases last week showed some serious price ioncreases(I was watching carefully, as to me that was the main strongpoint of Canon vs Nikon, I dont think theiir build quality re shutter and body is as good as Nikon, but that is just my own anecdotal opinion based on all I have read on the two re users experiences).

That is on the back of as yet unrealeased new cameras re 7D, 5D and even the already announced flagship.

A bit unusual to not have released even one of those cameras fully yet, but be rushing out lenses, no? It gives the impression , even if false, that they are having some issues in the new releases, bear in mind Nikon has just released two new bodies, despite the earthquake and floods.

Canon has seriously dropped the prices on the 'legacy' cameras, but seem to be taking ultra long for their bringing the updates to market. Even re the absence of samples for their already announced flagship?

Two things caused the migration over to Nikon from Canon in the past five years. The 1DMKIII debacle, and the D3/D3S.
