Fear of a used d30

I'm trying to decide between a used D30 and a new D60. I'm pretty sure the D30 is all the camera I need (8x10 prints) and the D60 may be overkill, but I'm nervous about dropping $1,000+ on a used camera with no warranty and no recourse. Can anyone quell my fear with some positive stories? Am I correct that there is no discernable difference in an 8x10 print from these two cameras? Thanks.

John

It depends on where you get it. If it's someone you know, and you can check it out, that may be the way to go. OTOH, I'd never drop a grand or more on a used item without checking it out, unless I bought it through a dealer I trusted.

I bought my D30 as a refurb through B&H, and have been very pleased with it. I'd be leary of anything on Ebay, for example.
Also, it depends on how much experience and knowledge you have of cameras.

Take the worst case, you pay 1000$, and the shutter dies, cost 300$, not the end of the world. But most likely, the shutter will not die!!!

I Bought a used D30 from a company that used it to shoot ANIMATIONS. This paticular camera had shot between 46000 and 80000 shots, and it still worked fine. I payed $300 for it.

The original shutter in the D30 is build for 25000 or so shots, so this was worn out. The camera still worked fine, but the flash sync did not work, so I had to replace the shutter to make it sing.

Cost me $187 for a new mounted shutter, so I now own a perfectly working D30 and payed $487 for it.

Get the used one.

...I guess that's why used things are cheaper. I bought a d30 last May on photo.net and haven't had a single problem with it, they seem to be pretty sturdy cameras. But I can't vouch for EVERY single d30 out there. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

Michael,

And how did you see that the flash sync didnt work?? Was it all of a sudden, no flash anymore?

Mine constantly underexposes for about a stop. But it could well be the canon "feature" that many of us encounter.

And when used with flash 420ex, i get mixed results, but i am not alone here neither... Seems to work like a spotmetered combination

Thanks for the input. No one answered my second question, however, which was whether there is discernable difference in 8x10 prints between the D30 and the D60. If there isn't, it might not be worth it to spend the extra cash for the D60. After all, I'm upgrading from a Pro90, so the responsiveness of the D30 will most likely be enough to keep me smiling.

John:

You are quite correct, you should NOT see a difference in an 8 x 10 print from the D30 vs the D60.

BTW, I just got a D60 and am thinking of selling my D30 It is in excellent shape, was fairly lightly used. If interested, please e mail me.

Jack,

Just out of curiousity, why did you decide to upgrade to the D60?

Michael,

As the shutter ages it will take longer to open and shut so the flash will go off before the shutter opens. You'll start seeing the flash in the viewfinder instead of in your pictures.

$187 for a new shutter is great!

I thought the D60 was shown to have better color balance in some situations.

Wow, i see the flash in my viewfinder, but also on my pictures, probably correct,; not?

Rudy

You will not see a difference between the two unless you crop a lot and then print to 8x10. Most D30's for sale have many pictures of them. From the pictures you can get a good idea of how well the camera was taken care of. The D30 is a very good camera and if it looks good then it probably is.

I have one for sale that I really don't want to sell until Febuary or so but here is a link to my pictures of it. I can tell you that mine looks and performs just as it did when it was new. Ussually if someone shows many detailed pictures of it then they are probably not trying to hide anything. Like I said earlier, I'm not so sure that I really want to sell until I find out what's going on with the 1D but you might be interested in seeing some pics.

Fred's sight has some D30's for sale. Here's the link:

You will be very happy with the D30 if you decide to get one.

A well cared for D30 is certainly the way to go IMHO .

I used my 1st one for 1 year . When the D60 came out , I sold it , thinking the 'upgrade' would be great . I got so many problems with it ( CF 02errors , files not transferred to the card and AF problems with my 5 Canon lenses ) , I got really upset , especially considering the way we have to follow to send our camera for repair in Belgium . I sold mine and bought a second hand D30 . No problems anymore . Next , I will try to get a refurb 1D if and when they will be avail for export to Europe .

I'm not wanting to start a flame war . My D60 was most certainly a bad sample but as I paid full price for it , I was expecting better results than those I got . What I regret from the D60 compared to the D30 are the larger buffer and the ability to crop an image and get good large prints .
Good luck with whatever you choose .
