Does anyone else feel the need for GPS??

I love the new OM-D so far, beautiful design and Olympus is addressing the lack of primes from the four-thirds system by introducing some wonderful lenses. However, the one bothersome aspect with all this development is the lack of a built-in GPS unit. How hard could it be???

Most P&S cameras seem to have one and Sony carries it on most of its bodies as well, why are camera manufacturers adamant to not include one in their top of the line "all-electronic", 21st century flagship camera????

The lack of this feature really annoys me, I love taking pictures when I travel and it would be amazing for me to be able to interface pictures onto a map using GPS co-ordinates. Anyone else feel this way??

Given the "all-weather" capabilities of the new rig, you'd think it would be natural for Olympus to release a GPS unit that uses the accessory port in the hump the way the Nikon V1's optional GPS module does.

FWIW, I'd love to see one as well, and hope they make this available at some point in the near future for a reasonable price. Until then I'll use my iPhone to make GPX files :)

I would guess Olympus is workingon oen that will use the AP-2 port and hotshoe. Give them time.

Don't know if i would personaly need it much - but i totaly think its needed...

Things i would want from it:

Altertude, location and direction pointed...
Also be nice if it tyed in with the IBIS to do astro tracking as well...

If it did all this then I might get one - if it only just put a dot on a map then I personaly would not get one!

It doesn't just annoy me, it's a must have. I'm sick and tired of carrying an extra GPS unit and syncing the pictures.

I want it built-in. Its cumbersome carrying these little niggles, GPS units are miniature, its a no-brainer for camera manufacturers to include them and yet they don't!

Could they upgrade PenPal to connect to a smartphone to get your gps coordinates from your smartphone.

. . . Yes I'd be happy enough with a GPS unit that uses the accessory port. This E-M5 isn't a coat pocketable PEN and there will be a small/medium sized bag needed for it that includes lenses, flash and other accessories for most users including me I think.
 
I know sarcasm doesn't translate very well online.

When people tell me they need GPS for their cameras, I assume they are kidding.

I can't tell if this thread is serious. I don't really believe anybody thinks it's a "must have" . Do they?
 
Nah, they're serious apparently, guess that's because by the time you get the film to the lab, then get your prints back, you end up not remembering exactly where and when that shot was taken !

Oh wait... nevermind, they're just goldfishes I guess.

There are tons of photographers, including myself, that would like to have their images to carry that additional metadata. Why does that seem so strange considering you're using a digital camera? Why is it any different from wanting a camera to embed EXIF data?

I couldn't care less about geotagging.
I even went as far as turning off location services for my iPhone's camera.

If I really want to save a location, I just make a GPS waypoint the old fashioned way. But I don't need this for every photo.

Instead of the useless penpal Bluetooth module, I would love to have GPS.

The issue, much like the penpal device, you can have one or the other but not both.

I good solution would to have the GPS battery powered with two AAA batteries and then attached to the data port....but...olympus does not make its accessories work that way

I also would be interested in one, like Pentax has. The rotational stabilization would come so handy for that!

Not a "must have," but def. a great feature. Micro 4/3 is a great travel system, and being able to log your route automatically sounds very logical. Sometimes I do not have time to take notes about the place where I took the shot, the GPS tagging would be a great reminder.

Why would they build in a miniature version as found in compact cameras that adds an insignificant amount to their manufacturing costs when they can make a bulkier add on device that they can sell to us for a grossly over inflated selling price? Cynical? Yes, absolutely!
