I work for a local weekly newspaper in advertising but we didn't have anyone available to shoot Saturdays basketball game between Tennessee and Conneticut. I was asked if I would be interested in shooting it and of course I jumped at the chance.

I was a little overwhelmed at the thought of rubbing elbows with the real pros!

Armed with a 30d with a 50mm 1.8 and a 60d with a 200mm 2.8 I shot over 300 images and was fortunate to get a few keepers.

You can see the images here: http://www.theknoxvillejournal.com

Wow! What a great opportunity and you certainly scored with wonderful photos. Bet it felt pretty awesome to be down there with the pros.

Nice job, Doug! Great photos!

When you get down to the nuts and bolts of photography, the results depend on the 'nut' behind the camera!

See the 'Gear List' in my 'Profile' for my current equipment.

I did a wedding once and one of the bridesmaids said "I WANT THE GUY WITH THE BIG ONE" meaning ME! Well, really meaning by Canon 7D and lenses and not the guy with the point and shoot.

Frankly, it's not the size of the equipment that matters. Those are find shots. No reason to feel inadequate with smaller lenses at all.

I recently shot a balloon festival and only took my 7D and Tamron 18-270mm. Frankly, I wish I had put my "nifty 50mm" lens in my pocket too. That lens cost me less than $100 and takes great photos.

Heck, here's my blog on the balloon fest...

For a first time, you did well.

The biggest issue with the shots in the gallery is a lack of faces. The shot selection has a lot of faces turned or blocked. That's a common mistake from people new to shooting basketball. Sometimes when it's an important play, you have to take what you can get. But most of these photos are not representing an important play. So, you really want to try and get shots where you can see faces/expression/emotion as well as action. That's going to come with practice.

Thanks for the advice John. I have several more shots that do include faces but I have had computer issues making it difficult to get them edited and uploaded. I'll post more as soon as I get a computer working. Using an iPad now.

I am always open to suggestions and tips to improve my photography. When I got word that I was shooting the game I came here and searched for tips on how to shoot the game and that was a huge help. I also got there early to shoot the warm-ups to figure out what settings to use.

Thanks again,

Doug
