Bad Pixels

So I have been shooting with my 5DM2 for some time now and I have started noticing "bad pixels" more and more. On the shot provided (link below), straight off the camera (this is a resize, I can send the original 12Mb file if interested) I could count at least 12 spots without zooming in to actually pixel peep. Is this about right? Some of the bad spots look like a tic-tac-toe board and other spots are what I'll call "flares" of color (red and purple thus far). I haven't heard of sensors failing quickly...Wondering if others have seen this phenom and if there is anything that can be done...

I did look at other shots from the day and the same spots/artifacts appear in other photos.

I have 7k actuations thus far on the 5DM2 and have seen this with my 24-70mm and my 100mm macro, just not as apparent...This pic was taken with my 70-200mm.

Thanks,
m@

If you click the image to get the largest size, then right-click and save to desktop and view it, along the edge of the water where it begins to fall, you'll notice a small red box. When zoomed in, this box shows a tic-tac-toe-grid...Also, I have found the majority of bad pixel spots in the upper right corner. Granted some of those bad spots can only be seen when zoomed in.

unfortunatly, DP wont allow the original file as an upload, so when the image is resized, some of the artifacts get harder to pick out. And I don't have a good place to upload to...

Crop the interesting part and post it.

I could see about 10 of them in the second pic.

I have not done much in the way of long exposures with this body, but it wouldn't surprise me that there are some hot pixels. It happens. I have no idea what Canon considers acceptable. If you are shooting jpeg, I think you are stuck with them and might have to deal with them manually. I believe the last time I shot RAW with a Canon body, DPP would map them out when I made the jpeg conversion from raw. ACR in CS5 does it automatically, as does LightRoom. They are not pretty, but can be a fact of life with a digital camera.

Send it to canon, they can fix it

I got this one right in the center of the sensor, but not quite noticable. 100% crop

enlarged at pixel level. 3200% crop

First of all, take a shot in manual mode with the lens cap on to get a black image, instead of trying to locate hot pixels in a photo full of detail!

The fix : Remove lens and put the original plastic body cap on. In the Sensor Clean menu, do a Clean manually. Switch camera off after about 30 seconds.

Put lens back on, take another black test shot as above. Compare.

;-)

I tried the lens cap test and sensor clean...On shot interval shots (1sec.) this did clean up the one or two noticable pixels...I then tried the same test on a 30sec. shot and everything and more came back and the sensor clean did not help.

Seems to be related to duration of shot. My posted shot was 40 secs.

Very handy test for sure though, thanks!
