Today my X10 refused to focus practically on anything outdoors, about half an hour before sunset. It was cloudy in town, but I'm sure that any of my other cameras wouldn't have had trouble focusing, including my LX5. I had the camera in A mode, ISO 100, but I doubt this matters. Is this a known problem of the X10?

Did you make sure it was turned on? I've heard that if you don't turn it on, that's a known problem. Good luck.

Did you use Multi oder Area focus? If in Area focus, did you try to change the size of the focus area?

I used Area and default size.

This answer confused me, and perhaps I'm missing good information:

If the camera is off, how would anyone know it's not focusing ?
Pay no attention. He just tried to be funny.

You might try reformatting your memory card. If that doesn't work, do a hard reset.

Today I inadvertently switched the focus mode switch on the front of the X10. It started acting funny until I figured it out.
Not sure this will help you but it is a possibility.

Nope, I checked that, it was the usual AF-S. Still puzzled... :(

Focus assist light was on, but does it work at some 20 meters distance?

I just checked again in a darkish room. In Auto mode it does focus, but in A mode no way.

I will reset it if nothing else works.

Did you make sure that you had a good, high contrast edge for the focus system to work on? Dull, bland surfaces will cause poor focus operation.
True, I know this. I was trying to focus on the houses at the other side of the river, quite contrasty and colorful in fact. No way it would AF. By the way, I just noticed right now that I have light assist on, but I don't see any light coming from the camera even in a darkish room, and still no AF...

I did the reset, same problem. In P and in Auto it focuses in low light. In A no way. I don't get it.

Do you have any of the multi-exposure drive mode options selected? That will inhibit the focus assist light.
No, set to "still image". I seem to have 2 problems:

1. I never see AF assist light functioningm and I have it "on".
2. In dim light the camera focuses only in Auto.

I wonder if it is a defective camera or a "feature" of the X10, which would surprise me.

Thank you all for your help.

WHAT...?

Are you being serious or is another one of your daft answers?
He could well be right if 'turned on' is interpreted properly!!!

Per Oxford Dictionary:
turn-on (noun informal): a cause of excitement or sexual arousal.

ps If you see someone without a smile on, give him one of yours... :)

1. I never see AF assist light functioning and I have it "on".
You have your camera in "Silent" mode. You know where to take that off?

I think you will find that the flash won't work, either!
2. In dim light the camera focuses only in Auto.

I wonder if it is a defective camera or a "feature" of the X10, which would surprise me.
Defective user. Cannot get any money back on him. ;-)

I think it will focus nicely once you get the focus assist light working.

Not in silent mode, I had checked this too (and anything else I could think of).

Flash works.

:) I hope you are rightm but I cannot make this light assist to work.

Let's hope. Thanks for your help.
