New to the MFT and I've seen many people using legacy lens like the Canon FD lens on their body. How do you change the aperture on those lens that mounted on a body like the GF1?

Usually by twisting the aperture ring on the lens, if the lens has one...

Manually, since there's no communication between lens and body whatsoever.

Just put it in A Mode and dial in your preferred Aperture and ISO, the GF1 will set the Shutter Speed accordingly.

Is that means I will need to dial in the the aperture setting that I am going to shoot with everytime in order for the camera (lets say GF1) to calculate the proper shutter speed?

No. As long as the lens is actually stopped down to shooting aperture, the camera will meter the light coming through and adjust the shutter speed accordingly. The actual aperture doesn't matter, only the amount of light coming through the lens.

Note that legacy lenses won't stop down automatically at the time of exposure, like they do on their original bodies. You need to actually stop the lens down prior to taking the picture.

Got it, thanks everyone!

Yes, unless you put the camera in manual and set the aperture and shutter speed yourself.

In most shooting situations, you would probably set the aperture once and leave it there unless lighting conditions change - or if you choose to change your DOF.

With a few exceptions, legacy lenses operate the same way on m4/3 bodies as they did on the camera bodies they were originally designed for.

Best regards,
Lou

Yes I have a number of FDs as well as others and the FD 28/2 is one of my favorites. I shot bracketed shots with it this morning on my G3. Easy peasy as they say LOL. MF assist is lovely in EVF or LCD.

Oh, BTW I did use my FDs on both my GF1 and G1 before getting the G3 in June. I prefer some of my smaller lenses on the GF1 like the FD 35/2.8 or one of the 50s.
