I'm wondering whether to get a GX1 or to wait until the GH2 is replaced. What is the consensus about the likely timing and spec for the GH3?

My bet is we will see it next fall, but it will not be available until 2013.

The new f/w if it adds 25p will be like getting a GH3 ;-)
IMHO it's not a GH3 unless it has 1080p60
The FZ150 has 1080p60 so the GH3 better have it.
IMHO the GX-1 should have had it. I was very surprised when Panny introduced a new "high spec" M43 camera without it after having included it in their Superzoom P&S camera.

But since the GX-1 just appears to be a repackaged G3, and since it seems like the G3 sensor only outputs at 30fps max, I guess it just wasn't in the cards... :(

The original schedule for the GH2 successor was March 2012. I see reports of a later date but I do not know if this is guessing or the people have newer real information.

The big news is that the status as a 'flagship' is far more prominent than before. The GH project started as a movie/still camera project but has evolved into 'the flagship' and is now being regarded as more significant.

As for specs, they have some really significant technology in development, but it is more a case of what is solid by the cut off date then the camera being delayed to wait for the tech to be ready.

I say GH2 successor as their was even talk at some stage of a new name, but I think that lost momentum.

So March 2012.....June/July to really get hold of one. Differing prototypes already but final decision on what makes production still not yet final.

I don't think it'll take another year for the GH3 to come. Pana must know the competition is fierce (now that Sony, Nikon and Fuji all have released damn good cameras). Also, it only took one and a half year to come out with the GH2 after the (2009 spring) release of the GH1. I'd bet the GH3 will be announced next Spring.

Hope it'll be sold with the new 12-35 in kit (hopefully below $1500) and it'll have all the goodies of recent cameras (electronic and, therefore, completely silent shutter of the Nikon 1; 60p of the Sony cameras; panorama, HDR, hopefully GPS etc.) and more.
No GH3 for 12 months. ;-)

Thanks everyone. Seems the earliest delivery date is summer 2012. That being so, if the electronic viewfinder is a good one I'm tempted to get the GX1 and 12-35/35-100 in January, keeping my GH1 body then deciding whether or not to go to the GH3 when it eventually arrives. Good strategy?

Even if the GH3 + 12-35 for $2000 is still a nice buy

And your point is???

If GH3 has zero interest in you, I wonder why you bother to read this threas!

Yup, but that's the price territory of the A77 + the excellent, already-UWA, bright 16-50/2.8 SSM. Pana MUST deliver some great advancements (better stills IQ: better high ISO / DR, quiet(er) or completely silent shutter, weather sealing and some consumer stuff like GPS, easy Panorama etc.) in GH3 to be able to compete with the A77. If the stills IQ / DR lag continues, then, I don't think there would be many casual (read: no-movie freak purchasing the equipment almost strictly for movie shooting) GH3 buyers.

Well the GH is now well know for "the hybrid camera", it is heading toward different direction and market than A77 I am afraid.

The competition isnt that fierce atcually, Sony's best sensor, the 16mp one in the 5n is only available in the very poor Nex range, so scratch slt as 24mp sensor is horrid, and the lens's for nex are horrid too. Then theres the Nikon, nikon 1 is trash and the rest are looking decidedly old-hat and big and lumpy. So, actually GH2 is way out in front and already has 50p/60p, ok its 720 but most people only use this for slow-mo and the fact it isnt artifact-aliasing ridden and can be made to work at very high bit rates is more than enough. For serious stuff 24p and 25p(when it comes) is what matters. The problem in the UK is we can match the 25p slow-mo with the 24p very well, 720p50 and 25p 1080 will do much better actually.

No that interested in any of the above, gps, hmm, hdr, shoot raw hmm and the new bracket f/w will be faster, panorama, hmm, 60p, see above, silent shutter would be cool I guess, just shoot 176mbit video instead and pic any of your 25 hd frames/sec?

Yesterday I bought a GH2 at B&H, thinking I did well at $820 for new with warranty but out of box. Later yesterday the price of new GH2's dropped $200 - $20 less than I'd just paid. (Oh well, still a good price.)
This might have nothing to do with upcoming models but it did make me wonder.

The viewfinder should be the same as you find in the GH1 you already have, as well as in the G1, G2, G3; it is a high quality EVF. Only you can really tell if you need more than the GH1 you have, and currently, the only Panasonic cameras available with the new sensor is the video optimized GH2 and the stills optimized G3.

So if you want/need and can wait for the GX1, why not? Seems like a good strategy....especially since the UK seems to get product much faster than the US!
