Squirrels

Photographing these little fellas must be a lot of fun. And you're just using the camera's own lens to get close enough - not an extender? My dog chases them up trees so when they see me coming they go into the third dimesnsion rapidly.

Comments will be greatly appreciated.

Any suggections about shooting animals and postproccessing (
editing in PhotoShop etc ) ???
Your shooting looks fine, well done for catching them with only 200mm to play with.

not too sure about some of your exposures, They're ofter a bit over-exposed. I wouldx go for nmanual exposure myself, and 'eye it in' on the EVF.
Regardless, the post processing could be better, check out here for a start:
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/
Under tutorials.
The technique I've just used to alter the exposure of no9 is here:
http://www.pbase.com/image/566166

Unfortunately pbase doesn't seem to be allowing me to post at the moment, so I can't show you what I mean, but I basically darkened mostt of the image, and then rubbed through to a layer where I had the original exposure in areas where it had become too dark
Hope this helps.
Enjoyed your shots,

Hi Tarpan,

I'm not sure about your remark of them being "stupid like chickens". If they are, then I'm about to develope a huge inferiority complex, as I have been having a running battle with them over my bird feeders for the last three or more decades.

Nice pics....For what it's worth...My personal preference would be to darken somewhat and run Color Balance in PS. Slide the bottom lever a little from yellow to blue and/or add some magenta.

Regards, Ray

David,

What are you talking about, "only 200mm to play with?" I could shoot squirrels using the macro setting on the D7i. I'm not exagerating. My wife feeds the birds around our house and these rascals manage to defeat almost any deterent we've tried. One was in a dome feeder which is just outside one of our windows. I opened the window and he was so engrossed in the "free" chow that he didn't notice me. I actually yanked his tail to let him know that he was not to help himself to the bird seed. That did get his attention and he left.

Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of this. Maybe during the winter "cabin fever" days, I'll set up my D7i and try a few shots. If there is interest, I'll post a few when I get them.

Yeah, I guess so, it's just that the couple of times I've tried the little critters have been so fast moving that being able to stand back and try to catch them on zoom is easier. When they move, they move FAST!

Sounds like a tall tail to me about it's tail. Must tell me your fishing tales sometime!
Best regards.

It's really too bad they don't get anything to eat around my back
yard. If you check out http://www.pbase.com/image/9007378 you will
see what I mean.

There's never a diner open when you want one!

Enjoyed the rest of your pics as well. 2nd snowfall has to be one of my favourites. I'm starting to dislike this forum - too many good photographer's on it.

I know it's sounds like the fish that got away story, but I really did yank it's tail. I could have held on, but I was afraid of getting bitten. If squirrels get accustomed to getting their way, they get pretty brazen. Once on a vacation in Grand Manan Island in Canada, I had a red squirrel jump on my lap and try to get a cocktail peanut out of my hand. i'm sure that he was accustomed to get handouts from the vacationers. It will probably be January or February before I get a chance to take photos of some of our "cheekier" guests, but I'll try to do that and post a few shots as proof for you.

I was teasing you. I know how brazen they can be. In the park at the back of my house, you can not only feed the squirrels by hand, but if they don't like the menu, they will take chunks out of the hand that feeds them.
Mark Twain would not have liked them.

I now no longer think cute thoughts about them, but instead start looking up my pioneering recipes. Ummh! Tasty!

Probably, I should adjust brightness on my monitor fisrt. Or on your monitor.

By the way, it's a big problem for me. On monitor pictures look good. (Except that one that your corrected : my mistake) Printed pictures look a little bit darker to compare to monitor. So, to match paper I should decrease brightness, to match your monitor - increase.

I'm confused.
