I tried to update Panny 14mm lens on E-PM1 via Olympus updater. I got connection error within a minute. Both E-PM1 and E-PL2 no longer recognize the lens. Did Olympus just damage my lens?

Because I was using Olympus updater.
Hi:

It's Panasonic's lens and firmware, Olympus only applied the update! Why blame them?

I'd start by calling Olympus and reporting the issue. It could be their updater at fault, or a unrelated connection issue between your location and 'there' (wherever there is).

Put them on notice, at least, should this be an issue specific to that body. But in the end, I suppose you'll have to send the lens in to Panasonic.

Wow that's scary. I have a 14mm hopefully coming in the mail today. I think I'll hold off on updating it to see if there are any more reports of this.

Everyone who is considering updating the firmware should ask themselves this. Do I have an issue with how the lens works today? Is there something in the firmware update claims that Panasonic has made that make it essential to install this update.

If you didn’t answer yes to any of those questions then why are you updating at all? Don’t fix what isn’t broken.

There is also the fact that the update for at least the 14mm pancake doesn’t actually have any noticeable effect. The Aperture already was continuous and constant and the focus sound doesn’t change a bit after the update.

Wow... so many issues with Olympus updating software. Makes me glad besides my E-PL2 I also have a GH1, so at least I can use the Panasonic body to update all my lenses.

The update worked just fine for me on Windows Viewer 2 via an E-PL3 body. The process did take longer than I expected. I am not suggesting this happened with the OP, but I could see where some people would be tempted to unplug and try again, which would be bad. Go grab a coffee, or whatever, and let the upgrade complete.

Sorry again for the lens brick (replied to you on mu-43 as well, I believe). I hope you are able to recover with a Panasonic body and SD card.

IMHO Oly implementation of update via special updater program and USB plainly sucks. Too many places to go wrong: loose usb cable, OS crash, internet connection dying, etc. It should be dump software onto CD card -> camera recognizes new firmware -> asks the user -> update.

on an EPL2 - so did the 100-300 so its not an EPL2 + Oly updater issue , I hope you get it sorted quickly

Since the update doesnt start until the file is finished downloading, it shouldn't have hurt your lens.

Likely scenario is:

You got a notification on computer screen that you lost the connection, so you disconnected the camera before the OK screen on the camera.

I had a similar incident with a camera update.. BUT, I left the software running without the internet connection, and the camera finished updating just fine.

Second likely scenario:

Bad or loose cable between camera/computer lost communication with camera... That will make a brick out of a lens or camera...

I have just updated the panasonic 14mm firmware using olympus updater on an e-p1 without any problems.

However, the damn aperture still makes the annoying click sound when focusing on this body, so it wasn't worth updating.

I think that I may have encountered something similar. My EP3 does not recognise a Pany 14mm lens.
Did you find a solution to your problem?

I very much doubt that the lens has been damaged beyond repair, but there are three possible reasons (or a combination of them) for what has happened to your attempted update:
  • there is a fault in the Olympus software.
  • there is a fault in the lens data that Panasonic have supplied to Olympus.
  • you have made an error in applying the update.
Since others have reported successful updates the suspicion must lie with the third possibility. It is essential when doing any firmware update to follow the manufacturers' instructions very closely. I know that I have made errors when trying to update Panasonic camera body firmware, simply because their instructions were far from clear.

As far as a next step is concerned, I suggest that you report this failure to both Olympus and Panasonic and ask them to advise you on how to proceed. We are often not helped by the fact that both companies seem to prefer to use automatic translation processes rather than using the services of a native English or American speaker.

I would have hoped that someone in either/both company's US or UK offices, would have grasped this particular nettle by now.

Just updated my E-PM1 and Panny 14mm using the Olympus updater. Whole thing was done in 2 minutes.

I totally agree. It's bad enough to do a firmware update without all the capacity for failure that the Oly software provides.
