These days due to several reasons I cant take my usual kit bag Kx and 2-3 primes. I end up clicking pictures with my iphone4 (always available!) but I long for the quality of lenses like the FA43 left at home :)

Whats a good pocket camera? X100? or the Q? FYI: I am not a pixel peeper, but love good bokehs!

The X100 will give much, much more shallow depth of field than the Q (or the upcoming X10, for that matter). This is mainly due to its significantly larger sensor than the other two cameras. It won't be as shallow as the FA43 wide open, though.

In other regards, I think the X10 would be handier--in no small part due to the zoom lens. None of these are super-pocketable cameras IMHO, though all are reasonably compact.

I posted my thoughts, as the owner of a Samsung EX1:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1012&thread=39314007

I'm pretty objective and urge one to check ALL in the category. They all have different deficiencies, but it's imperative, in the prosumer class, to try out the cams, understand what they can and can't do, and see if the different deficiencies get in the way of your style. Of course, RAW removes some of these deficiencies in all.

My album, which is over 95% EX1:

Of course, if you can wait, see if the X10 will deliver. If not, then go to:

Samsung EX1
Ricoh GRDIII/IV
Pansonic LX5
Oly XZ1
Canon S95 (or G12 with a slightly slower lens, but viewfinder)

I'm very happy with my Oly XZ-1. However, not using an Oly before, the interface took some getting used to. I also only shoot in RAW and don't use the video so I have nothing but praise for it, well minus the fiddly lens cap. (Most of the complaints I see about the cam are about the overly aggressive jpeg noise reduction and poor video quality.) With a 1.8 lens, you can achieve some decent bokeh with it.

Hi there,

To add to snake_b's list of top end compacts, I'd suggest you also look at the forthcoming Nikon P7100, (which is a refinement of the P7000 to fix the P7000's bugs). It has a zoom that goes out to 200mm (FOV equiv). Someone else also mentioned the recently announced Fuji X10 - there are no reviews as yet.

Personally, I have a G12 and am very happy with it but I accept it's limitations. (All compacts have the usual problem with CDAF - action shots are more difficult because the AF is much slower than you'll be used to with an SLR). If you buy a compact you'll also have to accept the additional limitation that you just can't get the shallow DOF that you can with an SLR. You can only approach it with the cameras with faster lenses or if you are in a situation where you can use a longer zoom length.

Another alternative is to consider a mirror-less camera like the Sony NEX series or Samsung NX series, plus appropriate adapter. The bodies are smaller than DSLRs but you won't save much weight if you add a zoom lens with any reach. They can remain fairly small if you keep to small primes only, but that of course means carrying the adapter and primes, so it's not an all-in-one pocketable solution. (If you visit the Sony forum you'll see that they're all more than happy with Sony's new NEX 5N with their latest 16.1 mpx sensor).

FWIW, I don't really think any of the suggested cameras are very pocketable. Jacket pocket may be, but probably in reality a small pouch. Pocketability seems to be a holy grail for some people, but I don't really know why anyone would want to put an expensive camera in a pocket anyway...... Mine seem to be filled with dust, lint, coins, keys, paper clips, collected shells, kids' muesli bars, etc, etc - all the absolute enemy of fine photographic equipment. Maybe their pockets are more pristine!

Cheers, Rod

If you are lucky enough to find one of these..........youl'll love it....

Yes, this is a great camera. I have one and it is very sharp with very good colour. Not quite as good as the S90/S95/LX3/LX5/Xz1 for low light but, in daylight, it will out perform them.

Also some claim that it is better than the newer models for IQ due to the particular lens used - not the same on the newer models.
