I have no idea what to expect anymore

I'm looking to buy either the D300 or D700 replacement. Here's at list of what might become available in this regard:

D400 with 16mp dx sensor from d7000 plus other new generation improvements
D400 with 24mp dx sensor from a77 plus other new generation improvement
D400 with a new sensor as yet not seen

D300sx, being basically a D300s with either the 16mp or 24mp sensor added, but no other substantial changes

No D300 replacement at all. D7000 is new dx flagship model, all future prosumer bodies are FX.

D700s with d3s sensor
D700x with d3x sensor

D800 with D4 sensor
D800 with some other sensor as yet not seen

Release of any of the above may happen in the next 6 months. Or not. I would happily buy some of the above, some not.

I'm tired trying to guess what I should be budgeting for. So yes, I will just go shoot with my D300 and D700, which indeed produce good results. Wouldnt it just be easier though if Nikon would just give some kind of rough indication of what to expect? I do not believe for a moment that any of this secrecy crap is benefitting them in the long run.

Honestly, if I wasnt in for £10k+ of Nikkor lenses I would seriously consider a 1dMk iv, which looks pretty much ideally balanced in terms of resolution, reach and noise performance for my needs.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, just had to get that off my chest.

Anyone feel the same?

What type of pictures do you take? and how large do you print them? I just cant seem to understand why you guys are always ranting about new gears. Is is too much time on your hands? more money that you are just so anxious to spend? or just plain stupidity. Maybe I am trying too hard to understand why a D300 is not enough for most of us.. It is plenty of camera for me I know, and could care less what comes out next , unless my D300 is dying, and I need to replace it.

Anyone feel the same?
No. I am still using my D200. I skipped the D300(s) because it did not give me substantially higher ISO, I went for 2.8 glass instead. I also skipped the D700 because, well, it is FX. I also skipped the D7000 because it does not have the D200/300 style body and features.
I'll patiently wait for a DX something that meets my stringent requirements :-)

Some cameras, some lenses, some computers

+1.

And I'm shooting a D50 :-) After 5 years with it I could use something more, but no rush so I'm patiently waiting to see what the D300 successor looks like.

Could not give a rats @rse with what Nikon comes up next. 24 mp means, new computer,

more storage and probably new lenses for me! 12 mp D300s is plenty of camera to enjoy,

unless You 'need' to print poster size or are a crop fanatic who can't compose properly.

I am interested in taking photos and not agonising over camera 'horse power' whenever

those marketing 'nazis' think it's time to do so. I'd rather spend money on lenses.

Anyone feel the same?
Not me.

If you're a professional, competing with others who have more features and you're losing business because you don't have those features (but are you sure about that?) then maybe you need a new higher-spec camera.

But if you're an amateur surely you don't need new features? Or if so, how have you managed up to now?

We're all a bit suckered by the consumer market imperative to drive sales by creating desire unrelated to any real need.

I just purchased my second D300... so yes I'm happy with my cameras. Would I buy a D300 replacement? Not for everyday shooting, but if it gives me something I don't have for my sports photography work, I sure would. Better AF, better ISO for night football, pro body, etc. Yep, sure would.

(BTW, Friday night football starts tomorrow night!)

Best,

Don

would I like better noise performance on below shot, you betcha, but I'm certainly not going fx and have to buy a 400 2.8!

I'm not losing any sleep about it that's for sure.
I'd rather see pictures than talk about camera features.

For people to stop expecting and for them to go out and take pictures rather than expecting ...

Not so much as a quote, but as to place emphasis upon the word. Sure I could have done something different, such as bold face, but I did not.

After all, a D300 is old? Is it not?
It's yours for £600 when the time comes. By the way, who are you quoting when you say "old"?
I don't haha. I'm still using my D200. I'll gladly take your "old" D300 when your done wth it ;)

Maybe you should start dating someone instead of worrying about what camera Nikon is coming out with. And you have a D700?

FYI Yves P. has a gorgeous and intelligent wife (+kids) so I doubt he has the urge to do what you propose...

If you were (erroneously) referring to the OP I'd say he'd do better to quit reading this site for the next six month, save his money in the meantime and then buy his wife a truly expensive diamond ring or whatever :-)

People seem to think I am dissatisfied with my D300/D700, which is odd because that's not the case (and also not stated anywhere in my post).

Shame to receive so many stereotyped replies (e.g. just go out and shoot (I do), why arent you happy with what you have (I am), etc etc) without actually commenting on the content of my post.

I can only assume nobody here thinks it would be a good idea for Nikon to give their customers an idea what is in the pipeline (a la Sony), and that anyway no one here will buy a D400!

All the best.

It's because Sony is the underdog and they try to catch up. Issuing a roadmap is their way to keep people 'inside'. For Nikon/Canon to do the same thing would raise expectations, invoke discussions and make people switch based on 'Internet' speculations.

Just quit reading sites like this, go 'cold turkey', hone your skills and come back in 6 month. Been there, done that.
