I removed the gold band from my 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM and I wondered if this will cause issues, such as drastic loss of resale value etc. I realize that I am no longer cool, but that doesn't bother me.

I'm considering removing it from my APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM too. Too flashy for me.

Besides, it is merely a piece of shiny gold-colored tape wrapped around the lens.

You won't be able to use your lens as christmas tree then. But that you did not intend either, right?

Thanks for the tipp how to remove this tinsel. This is really too shiny. Most of the names and this and that I normally overpaint with a permanent marker.

Actually, it was preventing the government photon monitoring rays from entering the lens, so now anything you photograph gets transmitted to a data warehouse in Langley.

So as long as you are cool with that... You can achieve the same effect though by wrapping camera, lens and head in tin-foil which blocks the equivalent rays.

I thought the subject line was leading to a divorce announcement. ;)

I've actually had one onlooker (at a photo shoot) ridicule my gold ringed lenses in the past. I just advised him that he probably couldn't afford to hire me anyway. Moron.

Yes, it is easy:

Use a magnifier and a good light to find the end of the gold tape, then lift the end with a sewing needle. After that, it all comes off very easily.

As for the permanent marker, it is a good idea too, except that it does not cover well in one application.

Hobbyist model paint comes in very small containers, and you can put it on with a toothpick. It coats very well. You can also buy thinner for it in case you make a slight mistake. There is plenty of room for added artistic expression too, if you want your camera to look like a zebra.

I'll try that. Thanks.

Jokes aside: It can be a problem if your models stare at all the golden letters and the bells and whistles attached your camera.

Removed that bit of goldy shiny thingy on one lens too, but I didn't have to use tools and trickery: the end of the tape came loose all by itself, just had to grab and pull :)

it would in a canon or nikon fit version as Mint means everything BUT in SA fit, most are glad to SEE a used lens let alone worry about a gold go-faster stripe having been peeled off . saying that, I don't see the point in peeling it off

Jim,

Ahh, just another example of civility in our modern era! And I would care what some anonymous carbon based lifeform (and I use the term life form loosely) thinks of the decor of my lens? Uninvited opinion at that? I like your comeback - I usually think of those 6 months to a year later.

Best,

Thank you all for your views and advice!

Now, nothing is holding me back from STRIPPING off this gold tape from my other lenses, except maybe taking time to find some red tape.

I guess I'm not understanding the point to ripping off the gold band. How is it too flashy to have it? IS it anymore flashy than the red ring on the L lenses or the gold ring on the Tokina AT-X lenses?

Noone said we would NOT remove or overpaint a red line/tape on a lens anyway. I would. On all my cams I usually overpaint, -tape, -glue all shiny letters, bells and whistles. No need for advertising, nor for eye catchers.

Kendall,

Thanks for putting my thoughts into words. This is one of, if not the, oddest thread subject I have ever encountered here ... and that covers a lot of ground.

With all due respect to the OP, I have just one question: Why bother??

lol. After ten years I can only hope the Sigma Police didn't come and arrest him for defacing their lens.

Actually, I read a lot that bright shiny stuff on a lens is annoyingly distracting. It certainly is to me. I would have gone over it with a sharpie.

I'm sure it's more "stealthy" without the gold band. I won't be removing mine though. I think that gold band looks nice. I've always liked black with gold accents, ever since I was a kid.
