This area has been hit really hard--I did take some pictures but they couldn't begin to do it justice--so to speak. We got power for about 15 minutes just after we hooked up our 110 generator--and then it was gone. We're luckier than most--a space heater and a generator that will allow us a few lights and fridge tonight and a fireplace. I wonder about the rest of you. I'm on my laptop on battery with a slow cheap AOL account I keep for traveling. Many won't have power for a number of days in this area (western NC--Charlotte and north). More than a million folks without power--and for us that is heat, water, lights--pioneer time LOL.

I just hope others are okay--safe, warm, able to still take a few pics and share with us later.

I tried to give you a call by looking up your last name on the internet, but I got a wrong number. I was going to check on my friend in N.C. I thought your generator would power more than that. Drag up a sleeping bag. I hope it doesn't last too long.

N.J. 8 inches of snow.

Diane,
I find it incredible that you are on the dpreview during such dire conditions!
Now that is dedication and loyalty!!!
I wish you the best!

Hi Diane,

What a bummer about the power outage during the middle of a storm. Hope you stay warm, comfortable, and safe.

I'm out here in Denver and it hasn't been too bad stormwise this winter. But it has been a while since we've had a good (not!) blizzard out here. I know it's only a matter of time before we do.

Take care and good luck.

BP

Sorry to hear so many are in dire straits. Manhattan is fine; just slushy streets and crowded subways. The Rockefeller Center Tree is lit and is Beautiful in the snow. Looking forward to Central Park this weekend. First winter with the D60! Yea!!!!
Do hope things get back to normal for you soon; Good Luck to you.
Happy Holidays from nyc.

We are lucky--only 17 hours without power. There will be lots without for several days. I would imagine that a lot of Canon SLR forum members are 'offline' due to power outages also--through the Carolinas, Virginia, DC. There are over a million without power in this area. When one is without power, most of one's day is spent figuring out how to get water, heat and some light LOL. I actually did take the camera out to shoot some but it was depressing--so many trees down. Also--fairly chilly and we knew it was harder to warm up with minimum heat. So--to all those who are 'offline' due to the same storm--I can only hope you are safe and minimally warm anyhow.

Juli, you have to have a 220 generator to run a heat pump or well pump--we bought our generator during Hurricane Hugo and its only 110--but it was the last one and we were grateful to find it LOL. With it, we at least have lights and can run a refrigerator--and a small TV LOL. I could have plugged in my laptop also, but I posted prior to dusk and we never turn the generator on until we absolutely need it--noisy and it uses a fair amount of gas.

I'll post some 'ice storm' pics tomorrow.

Up here in Boston we have only a few inches right now. Not much of a storm...fizzled out by the time it got here. Damn cold is too much and too soon, though. I dread my heating bill this year.

You can always go back and read Tom Gardner's post about testing the expo-thingy. His shots are from somewhere in California, I believe.

I'm another one without power, but I'm sitting at work (Big Blue in RTP, NC) and they have power. I was bored silly sitting at home with no power and no heat. Figured I might as well be some place warm even if it is work. Tonight it going to be a headache for people in my area. They are estimating 91% of the Duke power customers (100,000 people) will be without power (temps dipping into the 20s) since 3am this morning... The number of people without power has actually gone up as the day is coming to a close. The ice on the trees is amazing. Imagine quarter inch twigs completely surround by a half inch of ice.

Watching out the window this morning you could watch limbs literally break off trees and go crashing to the ground.

Some pictures from the local paper:

Yup, I got some pictures, too, but I forgot to bring the flash card reader along. Blast...

yes, its getting worse for many tonight. I finally saw the answer as to why those up the coast didn't suffer much (my brother is in DC--and not much there). The storm evidently moved almost just barely southwest to northeast--just clipping the edges of Virginia as it moved off the coast. So--that ended up leaving mostly us Carolinians (North and South) as the ones who got the brunt of the storm--the precipitation from Louisianna and Texas met with the cold from the north over us LOL--and its a real royal mess that will take a long time to unravel. I understood that originally it would travel up the coast, but that wasn't to be so--and I'm glad for those in the northeast states.

Photos are not representative of the real problems. Fog now makes visibility over our area at 0. Traffic in Charlotte's airport last night was totally at a standstill--and its a hub for US Air. 3000 people stranded on the tarmac in planes for hours--and they were gradually getting them into the terminal but didn't know what to do with them then. I understand it will be several days sorting that out. I'm just grateful to have heat and power. We've done this before--but how soon one forgets LOL. The camellia I posted last week--well its gone--both frozen and mowed under by ice avalanches coming off our very steep roof.

Hi Diane,

Hope you have a fireplace to stay warm! Yes, we got snow this AM and early PM too, but it was all snow and not ice--thank God! Here's a shot from our morning walk. This is Hartwood Acres, a county park, that hosts a holiday light show each year. The scaffolding is the support for the light displays.

It was a gorgeous morning...not too cold and no wind...perfect for a walk with the dog and camera.

Hopefully the worst is behind you. Just trying to imagine the damage and cleanup ahead of you is mind boggling. Hang tough and be well.

I feel your pain somewhat since last Winter we suffered thru a rotten snow storm that paralyzed Buffalo...so maybe this pic will make you feel better (I doubt it though)

I know some people who went down to Myrtle Beach for some golf. Was that area affected by the snow as well?

I don't think so--it was a bit southeast. We talked to a business associate below Charleston playing golf (Hilton Head)--it was in the 60's--that kind of 'did us in' LOL.

I hope all goes well for you in the frozen north. Upload some cool snow pics for us, especially here in South Florida.

Ity might be hard to believe for some of you, but I just switched back on the house air conditioning after giving it a week of rest. It had been very chilly down here in Palm Beach County - in the 60s to 70s in the daylight and into the low 40s and 50s at night. It was cool enough at night that I worried about the affect on my 1D's battery.

But the humdity and heat came back today, when it was probably in the low 80s. It's still muggy and in the mid 70s tonight, and so came the A/C.

Hang in there ...

I know the feeling ;-) Snow and cold up here in Canada. However, I do know of a golf course still open up in the Western Toronto area (as of today).

Got about 8 inches of snow in Waterbury, CT. Much easier to deal with than ice, obviously. We had an ice storm about three weeks ago that was pretty bad. I just had a few big limbs come down near the house but never lost power. 5 miles north of me it looked like a bomb went off. Trees down everywhere and people out of power for about 4 days. Winter really sucks. Here it is December 6 and I'm ready for spring.

I hear a lot of babies get born about 9 months after a big power outtage. Expect a rash of baby pictures on this forum next August.
