Samples of new Ex1 lens.

Some feedback would be nice, or do I take it there is no interest in these lens adapters.

As macro is not one of my priorities, but a longer zoom is, I bought a Samsung WB650 for £150. Terrific zoom, and most likely better IQ than the one obtained via a converter. Also less fiddly, and more flexible. Better value for money IMO. For my usage anyway. Am not too bothered about using filters on the EX1 either.

From what I've seen, the macro and tele lenses are reasonably good. The fisheye is more of a "fun" lens (without meaning to be derogatory). Definitely the EX1 is a great camera, and the long end of the zoom does limit its flexibility, so a tele lens would be useful.

I think these items are available separately, but it probably works out cheaper to just get the bundle - and I may do just that.

Regards,
Peter

I already have most of these components, as I bought the lens adapter a while ago, have a lot of 52mm filters, and have both wide-angle and tele adapters I bought ages ago for a Canon Powershot G1 (the first in the Canon G series) that also work with the EX1. Your series did inspire me to buy the Raynox macro adapter. Although I have a real macro lens for my Nikon, I find I almost never use that camera since I bought the EX1, and I'd like to try macros with that camera because of the deeper depth of field at equivalent aperture when compared to the Nikon.

Here are shots of the macro lens which is part of the fish eye lens and used separately. The 58mm U/V and rotating polarizer (pl) is screwed onto the lens adapter thus allowing then to be used with all lenses. Combining macro and fish eye makes a less powerful lens and is nice for photographing flowers while blurring the background. This macro lens is very easy to focus and the Ex1 zoom allows some adjustment.

It would be interesting to compare the more expensive Raynox with this inexpensive lens bundle. The house fly macro was shot at f6.9 to see the extent of depth of focus.

When I get the Raynox I'll do some testing and post some examples.

Hand held low light with 2.5x adapter. No problems with focus here and shot at iso400.

This one shot throw lounge window at around 100ft away. Cropped image to 37%.
Thank! you for taking the time to post the results of your tests. The results look good to me - as most of my pictures stay at 4"x6". YMMV

Thanks to all interested.

The rotating Polarizing (pl) filter attaches to the lens adapter tube and then the 2.5x lens is screwed onto the filter. This allows you to rotate the lens to increase or decrease the effect.

Here are some examples of the supplied Polarizing (pl) with the 2.5x lens set at 175mm.

Filter set to low.

Filter set high.

Without (pl).

With (pl) set to medium.

Your last two pictures won't display any difference, as polarizing filters only work against reflected waves of light, not direct. The clouds don't provide much of that kind of scatter necessary for the first pass.

Who says that? Polarizing filters cut specific direction polarized light. You can completely cut the light of a part of blue sky.

Alas, the Raynox 150, which is the one I bought, is only a 4.8 diopter lens, and on the TL500 does not allow for macro work. At full telephoto, the camera takes in about the same FOV with the Raynox on it as it does at full wide-angle. In fact this makes it much easier to take photos of things about two inches in diameter, but nothing close to macro. The 250, which is an 8 diopter lens, would have been a better choice for more enlargement, though still not really close to macro.

On the other hand, it's now easy for me to shoot closeups without being on top of the subject, and buying the lens also made me realize that reverse-mounting some of my 52mm thread Nikon lenses would allow true macro, and even super macro, shots. Because of the extra distance created by the adapter, the images are circular, but the magnification is extreme. And, the Raynox works fine with my DSLR and m4/3 gear. With a 200mm lens, it creates close to a true 1:1 macro image.

You're 100% right! You can really darken a blue sky and seperate clouds with a polarizer. Of course it will have almost zero affect unless you are shooting at the right angle. Works almost as good as a "deep red 25" filter for monochrome, but the 25 can be shot at any angle. JohnW

Thanks for the feed back.

It never dawned on me to reverse my Nikon lenses but now you have pointed his out I will have a play.

My macro lens which came with the lens bundle I think is a 10 dioptre lens but not sure.

Here is another example this time shot in scene mode using the text option. I’m beginning to wonder if this setting in jpeg deactivates noise reduction, more testing required.

Thanks for taking time to post these pictures and thanks for your commentary. It has been very helpful. I'm now considering a kit for my TL500.
