I have a question regarding the AF lock button on the back of the 7D. While I have read online that it appears you can push this button once to lock focus and recompose, I on the other hand have to keep it depressed in order to maintain focus lock to recompose. Am I missing a custom function that I haven't done. Because while it will lock focus if I push it once, as soon as I press the shutter release it will focus again. Thanks.

Yeah, by default the 7D's shutter button is set to focus+meter ... What you want to do is set it to meter only (go to custom functions to do this).

This way, when you focus with AF-ON, your camera won't attempt to focus again when you press the shutter button.

You need to dis-able focus from the shutter button. Custom function C.fn IV-1
page 217 in the manual.

Thanks for the info! Once I do this custom function though the AF associated with the shutter release will be disabled until I enable it again? I thought there was a custom function that separated these actions only when using the AF ON button. For example, so long as I don't touch the AF ON button the shutter release will still activate AF, but when the AF ON button is pressed the AF associated with the shutter release is disabled. I more than likely will forget and end up with a few shots OOF from just pressing the shutter release. Thanks!

Not that I'm aware of, sorry.

One other option though, would be to set the AF-ON button to act as AF STOP, which will allow you to lock focus as long as you are holding it. When you release, the camera returns to normal operation.

Would that be good enough?

No the shutter button af will be inactive untill you reactivate it. I keep that function on "my menue" for fast access.

At first you will jack up and miss a few shots but in no time you will realize the benefits of AF-ON and wonder why you didn't make the change before. Now when I use someone else's camera I find myself automatically feeling for the AF-ON button whether they have it activated or not.
