Love the camera. Not pleased that LRoom3 and CS5.5 do NOT support the RW2 files produced. My only option that I see is using the photo edit software included, however they can only be converted to jpeg 1 photo at a time. Boo. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to batch convert the 200 plus photos I have sitting in somewhat useless at the moment RW2?

The next release of Adobe DNG Converter should support the G3. It may come out before the ACR/LR updates.

The DNG converter allows you to convert the .rw2 files to .dng which can be processed by LR and ACR.

Delayed Raw support is one of the disadvantages of buying a very new model.

Did they include Silkypix software?
That does a decent enough job.

I'm not a Silkypix fan, I use ACR. At the moment I am shooting jpeg + raw and may reprocess when ACR gets updated.

However, in the meantime, I have done some processing in ACR by using SIlkypix to convert to tiff files with no adjustments. i.e. no noise reduction or sharpening or development sharpening. Then I open the tiffs in ACR. This is not as good as opening the raw files in ACR but does allow me to work with the application I am used to and also use my photoshop plug-ins (e.g. NeatImage).

MAybe you could use SIlkypix to batch convert to tiffs and then process in LR or Photoshop?

iPhoto and Aperture do batch RW2 files.
Also PSE9.
Didn't you get a copy of Silkypix with your G3? It can batch process.

This is a little off topic...I am a newbie at RAW so bear with me...

I understood all Pansonic MFT cameras produce RW2 files when recording RAW. So you mean that the RW2 files from, say, a GH1, is not the same as an RW2 file produced by a G3? LR3.4 seems to handle RW2 files from a GH1 without DNG conversion, but you are saying LR will not handle the RW2 files from a G3 (i.e., the formats are different, even though the file extension is RW2?) Learn something every day!

In the interim, I have had good luck with Silkypix SE...you can get the latest version on the web. The SE version seems to be tuned for Panasonic cameras only....which is why I thought the RW2 files were all the same.

A .rw2 file from, say, a GF1 will be different to a .rw2 file from a G3 because the sensor sizes are different. There may also be differences in the bayer array which is used to generate colour information. The raw converter program needs to know the camera specs to process the data.

This is not unique to Panasonic, it happens with all manufacturers.

Aperture & iphoto do not open .rw2 rfiles from a G3,

i am thinking of getting a G3 and took some raw & jpeg sets using the G3 and aperture will not open them ... will have to wait for an update to come out

Michael Reichmann at Luminous Landscapes used the beta version of LR with G3 support so its relatively soon I think. I'm shooting RAW+jpeg with jpegs as neutral as possible and adjusting those in LR now. I've rated my shote so that those worth the effort to return to will be easily available. Ive been through this before with other cameras--LR and PS offer upgrades for new camera bodies are usually available regularly.

Boy am I glad to see this thread.

I've spent the last 2 hours trying to read my G3 RW2 files - installing . uninstalling trying this and that.

I didn't realise that an RW2 file from this m4/3 camera is different to my G1/GF1 files ; kind of seems crazy!

All I have to do with LX5 files is to rename them as DRG to get them working in Lightroom.

Indeed they do, however I was not seeing a way to batch convert. Need to revisit the software tonight.

The camera comes with Silkypix that does the conversion well, it is a very good program with very image quality, use it

Soon adobe camera raw will support the G3 raw, so no worries

Right, as I understand it there is a difference between a RW2 file created by a g3 vs. another Panasonic model. Not sure of why this is. Not easy for the end user to be sure. Till LR is updated, I will just use Silky pix. Thanks guys!

Each new generation of sensor or in-camera processor brings a new generation of raw files. Sometimes the changes are minor, perhaps just to accommodate a higher MP count. Other times there are more basic changes, such as when camera makers began adding lens correction information and forced Adobe to rewrite ACR.

Adobe generally updates ACR (the raw converter used by Photoshop and Lightroom) several times a year to add new cameras.
