Is the G3's auto bracket feature the same as that on the GH2? Can it shoot with EV differences of + - 1 EV? How many frames can it shoot in AEB mode?

Thanks!

Haven't tried it yet but according to the manual, you can choose 3, 5 or 7 shots varying by 1/3, 2/3 or 1 EV, in the sequences 0-+ or -0+

I'm away from home and my G3 this week, but I have no reason to doubt what the manual says. Is there some reason I should not believe the manual?

I need to be absolutely sure before I can commit myself to making a purchase.

I'm a little surprised that given the number of G3 users here, no one else is able to confirm this for me.

I presume no one has commentd further because it was answered correctly.

OK I just confirmed this by selecting the # of shots, the step, and the sequence, and taking the pictures. It is exactly as the manual and I first said. I assume that now you'll be buying a G3, I can get a commission?

HOWEVER, you must go to the main menu to choose - in the Quick Menu, it just shows whatever was chosen before, you cannot change it from the Quick Menu - a strange software quirk (bug, really) that should be corrected, IMO.

OA, if you then choose the "auto bracket" from the quick menu if you want to change bracketing options from the last choice in "drive mode" you can change your bracketing but not the sequence. I found this a bit confusing too until I added both to my Q menu.

Thanks for the tip, it does make it easier to have both on the Quick Menu! I hadn't played around with setting it up but it's nice to be able to change it since I don't even use some of what was on it.

OK,
Now you've got me confused.

Auto Bracketing is a direct button on the four way controller (the bottom one). That gives you the choice for burst, bracketing, self timer. If you push that button and it was the last thing you used it will come up. Using the up button if looking through EVF or touching the screen you can chose your bracket. If it wasn't the last item left or right button will navigate you there and then you can use the up if you need to change the bracket or you can simply touch bracketing on the screen and then touch the bracket you want.

If you put bracketing as its own option on your quick menu it will take you directly to bracketing and you can change the bracket from there.

Is this different than what you were saying?

Since we are all creatures of habit the camera in most of these instances will default to what you last did.

LOL, so you will trust someone you don't know on an Internet forum. yeah, then you'll be sure, because the Internet is never wrong.

Please read the post form days ago...
you can choose 3, 5 or 7 shots varying by 1/3, 2/3 or 1 EV, in the sequences 0-+ or -0+
This means for 7 shots, it goes from -3 to +3.
I was sceptical because Dpreview's specs page contradicts that poster's assertion. Check it out yourself:

Then DPR is wrong. I verified the manual is correct by actually taking the shots, and reporting back to you. You can still choose to disbelieve me and the manual, what the hey...

And just to be doubly sure, I just now went to the quick menu on the G3 for auto bracketing. The choices laid out completely and exhaustively are as follows, the number of shots given first followed by the EV interval:

3 - 1/3 3 - 2/3 3 - 1
5 - 1/3 5 - 2/3 5 - 1
7 - 1/3 7 - 2/3 7 - 1

...just as was first answered.

It took me some time to get my G3 to autobracket as in the manual i.e. set number of exposures and EV steps then press the shutter and keep it depressed to get a burst of exposures for the number set. I could only get the number of exposures by depressing the shutter several times. Setting burst mode got rid of autobracketing!! Finally solved it, go to REC menu then autobracketing where you can set the shutter to single shot or burst. Does not explain this in the menu! It's a lot easier on my Canon 7D's but here I only have a three shot bracket available!!

Thanks all who posted above.
I just received my G3 and was trying to work this out myself.

To summarize all this:-

1) To switch the Auto Bracketing Function On or OFF, you need to use the "Auto Bracket/Drive" (bottom) button on the 4-Way Controller .

2) To change the specifics of Auto Bracketing (3, 5 or 7 shots and EV difference between shots), all 3 options can be used
  • the Auto Bracket/Drive" (bottom) button on the 4-Way Controller,
  • the Q-Menu - Auto Bracketing, or
  • the main Menu (center button of 4-Way Controller), then REC, and then Auto Bracket
3) To change the SEQUENCE of how the Auto Bracketing shots are taken (0/- + or - 0/+), you have to go to the main Menu (center button of 4-Way Controller), then REC, and then Auto Bracket.

4) To set it up so one (continuous) press of the shutter button takes all the Auto Bracket shots, you also have to go to the main Menu.

What had really got me confused for a while is that you CANNOT switch Auto Bracketing ON/OFF through the Q-Menu.

Thanks, and let me add - having the single/continous option not on the same menu with the other bracket settings was a very stupid idea.

Obviously the concept of "quick" menus distracted the designers from common sense.
