The S95 successor is unlikely to offer 1080p so no sense waiting if that's what you're holding out for. No one makes a 1/1.7" CMOS sensor (CCD can't do 1080p) and I can't envision Canon shrinking the sensor on their enthusiast pocket cam.

What's important to you?

Make a matrix and let that decide for you. Next generation is 6 months away and agreed, the next generation will not have 1920 x 1080 video in a 1/1.7" CCD chip though Canon could have something up its sleeve, one never knows? They own their own chip manufacturing including a CMOS plant west of Tokyo.

Or you might just wait and get a Lytro camera....www.lytro.com. Due out in 2011 sometime. Instant photo, no focussing, light field camera, will be introduced as a P&S form factor. (I'm kidding around about waiting for this, but it will be interesting). I watched an interview with the CEO and from what I can tell he sort of "gets it" from many angles (irony intended).

Taking photos now?
Cost? Price for what you get?
Low light photography?
Zoom?
RAW
Manual control: M, TV, AV, etc.
Sensor size? How big will you ever enlarge?
Brand? Do you care what brand?
Form factor?
Hot Shoe?

Put each camera in that matrix and see where the cards fall.

Consider the S95, Nikon P300, Sony DSC-HX9V, Lumix LX5, Olympus XZ1 to name a few.

Thanks, food for thought.

No hurry, wait.

If you like to start enjoying now, get the S95.
Odds are the S100 won't ve a breakthrough camera, just modest refinements

take it slow

I heard the new Canon S series will have:

1. 10 fps burst
2. full HD video: 1920 x 1080
3. Optical zoom and focus while filming
4. Dedicated video button

5. Custom setting position on wheel with up to 5 customer positions selectable with function button.
6. Sweep panorama.

7. cute little mini interchangeable lenses, you can throw 4-5 in a pocket in little plastic cases. Initially they will have fisheye, 400mm super prime, and a tilt shift. All will have built lens caps!
8. A new selection wheel with distinct clicks and a slider to lock it in place.
9. A cable release input for the shutter.
10. Will use magnesium on the top instead of plastic.

Okay maybe not......

... sounds a little bit Sony-ish !?!

Nah, I didn't list geo tagging through GPS integration......

Oh, and my S95 gave me a lens error and committed suicide while I was sitting at my desk.....I'm quite upset.

A Problem is only the pessimistic way of looking at a challenge

There are two Panasonic cameras with 1/2.3" CCD's and 1080p video,
so I guess Canon could go 1/1.7" CCD + 1080p.

Since the S90-> S95 jump was a minor one (e.g., still no zoom in video),
I truly hope the S95-> S100 jump will be more significant.

I would wait and see what the s100 specs are. And if you do choose a s95 I would still wait for a price drop when the s100 comes out

All good choices, but the S100 should be officially announced sometime in September.

There are no cameras from Panasonic or any other manufacturer with a 1/2.3" CCD sensor and 1080p video. Once again, CCD sensors are not fast enough for this. You would need multiple CCD sensors within a single camera to accomplish this with CCD sensors (as offered in professional video cameras).
