It's a trade-off. Using a higher ISO speed will mean more noise, but that is usually better than subject motion blur and always better than camera shake. Is it ok to bump up the ISO to 800-1600 in low light conditions. I shoot with a 400D.
Lightroom 3Nice, what did you use for noise reduction? It sure is OK. For example, here is an ISO3200 shot taken with the 400D, using the Tamron 28-75 f2.8. Shot at f2.8, 1/160sec.Hi,

Thanks!

For totally static scenes, eliminating camera shake and using a slower shutter speed can be the ideal solution - giving you a good exposure with no adverse impact on image quality. But if there is any movement in the shot it won't work. And there are many situations where carrying/using a tripod is not practical or even not permitted. Thanks for the comments.
Guess i'll end up using a monopod/tripod if i want to keep the noise low.
