Must have E-XX accessories?

Hi Buffalo Bob,
I'm really interested in the DPS-9000 which I first heard of in
this thread. But I've looked high and low to find the specs and
they just don't seem to be published.
Can you tell me what it weighs. Also, do you know if there's a belt
pouch for it or does it stay fastened to the camera?
Thanks for the help.
Hi Ken,
If you look at the photos I posted here:
http://www.pbase.com/mofongo/batterypack

You will see that the pack screws on to the tripod mount and can can even attach it to a tripod with the pack attached...

It is made by Digipower and can be found by doing a search for DPS-9000...

Good luck,

Bob

Get the LiPo!!! You will not believe the power it supplies. Recently did a shoot with over 500 exposures and used less than 20% of the batt capacity.

7 months and 3,000 exposures and has been charged 2 times.
Don't leave home without it!

Hey Quacker,

Congrats on ordering an E-20...you're gonna love it...

After the UV and polarizer filter the next thing I got for my E-10
was an Optech neoprene strap...makes the camera feel 50% lighter
and is large enough so I can carry it around my shoulder with the
camera hanging on my opposite side near my hip like an SLR is
normally carried...much more comfortable than carrying it around
your neck...I carry it this way all day and really don't even know
it's there...

The Wcon is a nice addition, I just bought mine used off a forum
member and it is a great piece of glass...it realy opens up the
view alot more than I though it would...

You may want to consider the DPS-9000 battery pack that screws into
the tripod mount, relatively inexpensive and lasts a long time...

Good luck and don't forget to post on the other oly forum also also
when you get it...newby just got an E-10...he loves it...

If you can afford the LiPo, get it. It not only lets you shoot forever (remember when cameras didn't use batteries?!), it transforms the way the camera feels.

Just got mine (E 20N) so am very interested in the responses you receive. I have a B-300 and was going to try to get a step down ring to see if it would work. It really is heavy so the Optech neoprene strap might be a great addition.

I couldn't believe what it costs! Wow, a lot of money for a battery. The DPS-9000 cost me $50. I know it won't last as long and I wish I could afford the LIPO, but it ain't in the cards.

I may consider the Lipo.
As others have already pointed out nobody ever regretted buying the LiPo-grip. With a bit of luck you may find a used one as people move on to newer DSLR cameras. It does add weight but ergonomically it has a wonderful design - try one and you're hooked forever.
A broad neckstrap is definitely a good thing too.
Gifts aren't subject to import duty so it's possible to avoid the usual
European ripoffs.
Maybe even custom inspectors read this forum?

If you buy within the EU you can legally save VAT and duty. If you buy a US model you won't be able to use your tele to show your pics. Not that I have ever had the need.

I wish you all the best with your new camera!

Hi Diane.

I think I know what you're talking about but I'm not 100% sure.
Does this Newton grip allow you to keep the flash at a vertical
position while you rotate the camera to portrait mode? I thought
the Oly flash bracket was necessary to achieve TTL flash or is it
only the cable? Do you have a link to show the setup?

Thanks, Maxven
Yes, the flash stays in place--vertical--and the camera VERY easily flips position. The bracket is VERY stable--and I like how the power cord is secured as opposed to my Strobo 120 (or any Strobos). You have to buy the flash cord attachment to suit your cord however.

No, you don't have to have the Oly bracket to use the FL40 flash. I used a Strobo 120 and the Canon power cord. Worked great. Still does since I now use the power cord with both the Oly FL40 and the Canon 550EX and 420EX. There was no Oly power cord available when I bought mine and most of us bought the Canon off camera power cord which allows TTL flash with the FL40.

Here's a link to the Newton http://www.newtoncamerabrackets.com/newton.html to see how they work.

go to 'bracket selection' and choose the Olympus to see the ones recommended for the E10/20 with and without grip.

Dont forget a remote cable shutter RM-CB1. I use mine all the time when I am working in the home studio and doing macro shots as well. I also love the MCON lens. Also the TCON14B Lens is great for portraits. Hey what do I know.

Enjoy your new camera.
Hi, I'm getting a refurbished E-20 from the US. Most things are way
cheaper overthere so while I'm at it I might as well get the
accessories I need for a good start. So far my list goes something
like this:

1. UV, Polarizing, and infrared filters (multicoated)
2. Wcon08B WA lens
3. 1gig Microdrive
4. Flash bracket and cable for Metz 54 or 70 (I'll buy the flash
itself in Sweden or Germany)
5. A smart charger and some more high mAh batteries
6. Perhaps a Tamrac bag (613)

Since there's no knowing if the E-series will continue to live on I
think I'll give the Lipo grip a miss unless persuaded otherwise. I
have the remote cable release for my E-100. I already have a good
tripod and head.

I mainly shoot sceneries and interiors of old buildings but I hope
to set up a little studio to study portrait photography and product
shots.

Any input on my preliminary list is very welcome as well as tips on
where to buy online at the best price from a reliable dealer.

Thanks in advance, Maxven

P.S.: I know that customs would rip me off if I order directly so
I'm having a friend ship it to me as a gift.

Too bad about IR. Did you just have bad luck with your filters or
is this a common thing in the E-XX? IR makes for some interesting
shots both in winter sceneries and foilage
Maxven, start at this image and go for about 5 or 6--all taken with th E10 and Hoya R72. Most of my IRs were taken with G1 and Hoya R72, but I found the E10 quite acceptable. I use channel mixer (mono) primarily to convert my IRs. Sometimes I use LAB and lightness channel. No--you can't see 'through' the filter. I composed, focused, put filter on--all on a tripod--the only way I shoot IR.

Very nice work. I should have been more specific on the lack of IR. I agree that if you want to take a tripod with you all the time and can find a nice calm day (no wind) then the E-10 does do quite well. Since shutter speeds of 2 or more seconds are usually required I do not consider the E-10 a very versatile IR Camera. An example of one would be an C-2100 which allows viewing through the view finder and handheld shots. Sorry if my comments mislead anyone.

Hello Diane...

One more question about the setup you are recommending.

When the camera is in vertical mode, does it hang down from your right hand like when you use the camera alone or does your right hand hold the camera from underneath? I assume the first rather than the latter since it is much more natural, but i learned the meaning of "assume" a long time ago so I better ask.

Went to their website and it looks good!

Thanks in advance, Bill Handel

Hi Bob...

I searched B&H and found lots of OpTech stuff.

Is the strap your referring to:

"Super Pro Camera Strap with "A" Connectors & Quick Disconnects"
that comes in various colors?

Just wanted to be sure and order the right item!

I'm trying to think how to describe this. The frame sits in your hand--that little 'handle' sits out front and you put your hand under it instead of under the camera/lens. That stays 'as is'--only the camera flips over to the left (the shooter's left). The bracket, the flash stay as is also. The bracket goes under (or sort of 'surrounds') the camera--the lens sort of goes between the the 2 sides of the bracket. When you have hold of your grip (in my case) I just sort of lift up/over and the camera moves into portrait mode. It is quite ingenious--and very smooth and easy. Nothing like using my Strobo. so, no, I would say the camera doesn't 'hang' from my hand--it is supported by the bracket under it and the mechanism that flips it. Quite sturdy--to say the least LOL. I will never ever need another bracket in my whole life smile .

Hi Bill,

I'm not sure what the name or model is of the one that I have...I bought it at a local camera shop for about $16...it does have quick disconnects though...

I just have never taken handheld IRs. I used a tripod with my G1 also-(-a monopod works okay also), but I find I rather prefer a bit longer shutter times--more 'film' IR appearing. But--that being said, it does make it less flexible. I enjoy 'process' smile -- so part of shooting IR for me IS the tripod, filter, setting up the shot, etc.
