Why is Sigma hiding hi res SD1 sample images?

Some may perceive it this way and some may see it as a form of harrassment and intimidation. Don't see this from Canon, Nikon, Sony or any of the others. They wait until the product is ready. There is a lot of risk with this type of marketing. Others might even blame it on mismanagement and poor direction. If the demand for all Sigma products was greater than the supply and Sigma was a category leader I would say that their risk was much less. What's the price going to be?....$999 street, $1500, $2500 or are they waiting until the last minute and price it based on what the market will bear? I have been waiting for months for this camera and I am not waiting any longer. The delays and the failure to respond to emails and the postings on DPreview is a clear indication that they don't know what they are doing. Then there is the thought that lingers in the back of my mind.....will early buyers be the test market for the SD-1? How many bugs will there be and do I have the patience to deal with it? Everyone is different and will look at it in different ways. Sigma does not have a good track record in the development of new products in my opinion. Is Sigma really committed to the Foveon or are they using it for image? What percentages of their products are benchmarks? While all the major makers are including HD video as a built in feature, what can we expect with the SD-1?

Sorry, I am seldom this negative on anything but I am not going to play their games any longer.

The images are going to have to be really quite good at ISO1600 or they are not going to make a big impression on most DSLR fans.
incorrect statement
I shot film for 30 years and never used a roll of 1600
Totally nonsense. Digital sensors are much better at high ISO than film ever has been. This is the expected behaviour today.

Therefore - if SD1 does not handle high ISO well - that might be a show stopper for world domination or even getting any substantial market share at all.

And - before you ask - yes I have also used film for many years and I know exactly what you say. Its just that we are in the 21st century now and the rules of the game is slightly different.

Now - mind you - I have not the slightest idea whether SD1 will have any high ISO problems or not. Lets hope it doesnt.

Both the firmware and the new version of SPP are probably not yet finalized. That means posting samples now might not represent the final quality they aim for. Samples will probably be made as close to the final release as possible.
I dont buy that.

This argument is used every time. But ... it does not hold IMHO. Of course they can make very good images today under controlled situations if they are able to release a camera soon.

Personally I just think its their way of releasing things - being secret until its out there. Thats how they do it.

I think it's pretty simple.

They will do what they did for all their other cameras:

Release a fuller PDF brochure with images when they release the camera, not before.

I seem to remember something like this took place with the anticipation of the Olympus E3. Of course Sigma seems to have a habit of this and the others don't.

Has it really been that long of a delay? I believe that the end of March was a projected release. We're not yet two months beyond that. That's not much of a delay, IMO. If we factor in the horrible devastation from the earthquake, and I believe it is a factor, I don't believe it is unreasonable that the camera is still not released.

I used 1600 fujicolor, for my rotapancam, shooting under difficult light or when i couldnt use slow exposure.

Those who need 1600 digital have a) slow zoomlenses b) no tripod c) no money for better speedy lens d) no sense for good light.... e) think a better sensor- if not for low light-shooting- makes no sense

Here's a short reply to your long post:

Sigma is a small company, with a relatively small staff, when compared to the Big Guys. Everything they do is bound to take longer than some people are accustomed to. Rushing a product to market, just to meet the expectations of their critics, is bad business. You can be assured that they aren't dragging their feet, just to annoy you. ;)

And for the record, we should all be glad Sigma is still a relatively small operation, since not a single company on the planet has been able to maintain the same level of personal customer service once they became successful and huge. So enjoy it while you can. I'd rather wait a while longer for the product than wait for hours on the phone for a service tech in New Delhi.

Well I guess they indeed can. But it probably is simply the policy to not post any, just in case. Imagine the mess if they already put lots of samples out there and they run into some big problem. Now that'll be a marketing nightmare... From a business point of view I find it is very smart to only release things once they are truly finalized.
