Can't get the display screen to come on

Not wishing to give you bad news but it sounds like the camera is faulty, my D300s had virtually the same issue, it worked fine took pictures even the live view worked and displayed on the rear lcd....but nothing happened when I pressed the menu button and no preview of the picture when taken.

I did all of the checks you did and ended up returning to Nikon for repair, they replaced the main circuit board, and it wasn't cheap, parts alone cost me £300!!

I'm also having trouble with my monitor. I'm stumped and afraid that it will require a trip to Nikon. The camera works fine and I've tried several steps in combination. It works fine, except for the dark monitor. I removed and replace the lens, removed and replace battery and card. I've read the manual and I'm still stumped.
  • Did you do the two button reset? If not then do it. If you don't know how to, please read the manual.
Yes, also the side button reset
  • Did you try without card? What happens?
No change
  • My camera displays the menu when I press the Menu button and displays the info if I press the info botton, even if I remove both cards.
Mine does too
  • Does the top display displays anything?
All the normal info - E when no card, # of available shots, F-stops, etc.
  • What does the number of frames show with and without card?
See above
  • Did you try with a different card?
Yes, same result
  • What is displayed on the top display whan the camera is switched off?
Just the number of photos
  • What is displayed on the top display whan the camera is switched on?
The usual stuff
  • You said tha battery is charged. How do you know that?
I can take pictures, the menu works, the flash works
  • Is the view finder dim and greyish or bright and clear both when the camera is on and off?
Bright and clear on both
  • Look into the CF slot to see if there are any bend pins. Your card slot or card might be damaged.
Checked
  • My camera does not click if I don't have cards in it. It does focus, but not takes an image. What do you mean by saying your camera clicks? Is that the shutter sound or the focus and VR you hear?
Like I said, the camera takes pictures, but the monitor remains dark. Any suggestions? I don't want to send it to the shop, we're leaving on a trip shortly.
This may be a long shot, but are you expecting the LCD on the back to automatically display what you shot? What happens if you push the button in the far upper-left corner of the back...it has a right-pointing triangle?

BTW, there IS a way to get the D300 to automatically show you the images as you shoot them, but you have to set it up in the menus to do that...the default is to not automatically display the images (I think).

Like Vic says, page 251 in the manual.

Your problem is different since your camera seems to work fine but you did not read the manual. The Image Review is OFF by default, you have to set it to on. My guess is that if you press the Playback button (page 6 item 4) than you can see the images.

Thank you so much for the responses. Ours is the Nikon D100, the manual goes to page 200 ;) The playback function works, the LCD itself works. I can see the pictures we have taken. The issue is being able to see an image before taking the picture. It's called getting old and not having good eyesight. :| The LCD helps so much for composition. But we'll be able to use it just like an "old" camera, look through the viewfinder and take a picture! Our very last attempt is to clean the lens and camera with compressed air. I'll post an update either way (even to how much to fix it if that's the case).

D100 does not have live display. You need a more modern camera if you want live display. You have to use the viewfinder. Also, do not use compressed air to clean the inside of the camera. Frequently there are propellants and even oils in the container. Use a bulb blower, like a "Rocket" blower.

Thanks for the heads up, John. My husband is the one that uses the camera, I'll let him know about the live display. The camera is older, I got spoiled using the little automatics that have live display. I'll make sure he knows about the compressed air. So I guessed that you can say, THIS PROBLEM IS SOLVED! (at least mine is)

I have the same problem with my D70 - new battery, charged, inserted, and I get no display at all when I turn the power switch on. I did the 2 button reset, and nothing happened again. The memory card is inserted, but dont know if it works or matters, does it? Any advice? Thanks.

Maybe the board is dead. Nikon has a service advisory for these see here .

I had the same problem with my D70. Turns out the two stage trigger (half depress to lock onto something, then fully depress to take the picture) was fouled and would not fully release. Stuck in constant lock mode, the back display wouldn't turn on. After cleaning the trigger button and restoring full movement of the button, it now works fine. Just a thought...

Why resurrect this six-year-old thread?
