The ruins of Machu Picchu, rediscovered in 1911 by Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham, are one of the most beautiful and enigmatic ancient sites in the world. While the Inca people certainly used the Andean mountain top (2800M elevation), erecting many hundreds of stone structures from the early 1400's, legends and myths indicate that Machu Picchu (meaning 'Old Peak' in the Quechua language) was revered as a sacred place from a far earlier time. Whatever its origins, the Inca turned the site into a small (5 square miles) but extraordinary city.

That's truly a magical place, Choi, and again you captured it brilliantly -- and it seems you even were lucky with the weather :-) I'd love to go there myself one day.

generally in this 25-day tour. But the weather at Machu Picchu was just OK, you know in the mountainous region, the weather can be capricious. I did wait for a blue sky as the background, but to no avail. The same applied in my first visit to the place 15 years ago.

Choi

Choi,

I've seen quite a few photos of Machu Picchu, but yours are the best and most interesting!

Hi Choi,

Stunning scenic shots of an equally stunning place. My favorite shot of the bunch would be the lama ones.

It is my dream to visit MAcchu Picchu, and your whole set is fantastic :-))

Tell me please, is it difficult to arrange a visit there and especially take photos? How lmuch time you have to hang around the site?

you have to stay overnight at Machu Picchu if you want to take sunset and sunrise shots there.

An alternative is to take a morning train to the site from Cuzco (takes over 2 hours) and spend several hours there as a day trip. For this of course the lighting won't be conducive for really impressive shots. I took this route this time.

Hi Choi,

More great pictures :)

I don't usually get too technical about images, but do you do any post processing to give these pictures some extra "pop"?

We were at Machu Picchu last October, and your pictures seem to have some extra zing to them, compared to mine, also M8, although it was very cloudy and rainy when we were there. My Llamas are soaking wet!

Thanks,

The M8 gives very rich raw files to start with. I convert them under Silkypix (mainly for WB and exposure adjustment) and then adjust curves and saturation under CS4, but actually no elaborate processing. I even do not do layers nowadays.

It did rain for a while this time, but then the sun came out. Weather changes quickly in the mountains.

I think the wide perspective of the CV12 helps a lot.

Stunning images, Choi. The first two took my breath away. Well done!
