A33 Problem

I wonder if anyone has experienced a problem I am having with my A33.

Pressing either the Menu or Fn buttons causes a continuous oscillation through the settings. If I manage to capture the setting I am looking for I can work OK but often I give up and pull out my trusty A200.

I have tried a reset, changed batteries, changed card but the fault is there. I don't want to have to return it to the supplier as they are some 4000km away on the other side of Australia.
Is it a body fault or have I done something which can be corrected?

Sounds like maybe an issue with the 4-way control pad? As if one of the buttons/contacts is stuck down.

that's definitely a dodgy button. Might be something in there maintaining contact. I'd give it a good shake and if it doesnt work I'd send it in

Thanks for replies. I agree with your assessments. I'll give it some TLC (shaking it up - bashing the button etc) and then inevitably send it off to 'ere be dragons land where they will probably spray it with WD 40 and all will be well!

Don't even bother shipping it out - WD40 it yourself!

Hi there, I have an A33 & the same thing happened to me when I first set it up.If you go into the main menu & reset all defaults it will clear, well it did with mine.Give it a go & see..good luck..

It's a good idea to try cleaning the contacts yourself to save on shipping & repair costs, & time.

But don't use WD40. It isn't particularly good at cleaning contacts, will attract more dirt in the future, & may gum-up the works.

If you must spray, first make sure it only goes behind the switch & onto the contacts, not into any other areas such as moving parts or the optics. Use a proprietary contact cleaner - these clean contacts, evaporate quickly, & usually leave a thin film of contact lubricant behind.

Or use an air-in-a-can type spray product. These usually have cleaning solvents as well & evaporate quickly, but their main function is to force dirt away using the pressure of the blast. But note, apart from the pure CO2 products, these are never just "air" - they always contain a solvent. This is usually safe on metal & plastic, but do some trials first & be cautious where it goes! :)

Haha you knew I was joking, right?
Still, informative post nonetheless :)

No problem PureSolidness. Obvious you were joking and appreciated. I don't really think that the Sony Service Centre will use WD40 either. Mind you, as a West Australian talking about the Eastern States, I am not so sure!

I am not going to try electronic contact cleaner as it could damage to seal if I tried to get it past with the plastic tubing.

I have now tried everything from changing the battery after leaving it out overnight, changing the card, resetting the camera to default, trying with or without lenses and using somewhat choice words but all to no avail. Next thing is to contact the Service Centre on Monday

Hi,
I am having exactly the same problem with my A55.
Did anybody else find a solution for it?
