I love my EPL2, but since Oly came out with the firmware update, I've convinced myself they have NO CLUE how to debug or test this stuff. I've tried everything -- connect direct to my macbook, reboot in 32 bit, etc., but the stupid update app refuses to recognize that my F'ing camera is connected. Surely, someone has been successful, what is the "secret" that Oly isn't telling us?

If you don't see an answer here soon, try the folks in the Mac Forum.

I had no problems updating through a somewhat dated iMac just following the instructions, so have no battle experience to share.

Did you guys remove your memory card and select "storage" from the camera when prompted?

If you haven't already, choose "storage mode" when you connect the camera.

The update worked fine for me from my Windows7 machine but I also have Macs and one of them has developed USB driver problems when connecting newer USB devices such as 8mb and greater SDHC cards (works for smaller cards) or the Olympus PL2. I haven't taken the time to debug the USB problems on my Mac.

The particular Mac I'm having the USB driver problem with is a 20" 2nd-gen flat panel aluminum iMac with OSX upgraded to Leopard. I plan on wiping the machine and fresh installing Lion when it comes out.

Try finding another Mac for the upgrade or borrow a Windows machine. Concerning the firmware update I think it only affected the use of the wideangle and fisheye converters in use on the PL2 so you probably don't need the update right away.

Writing device drivers for OSX has never been the simplest exercise.

The only way I could update the firmware was to install the "Olympus viewer 2" software, it then updated with no problems, I use a Mac

Check the version of the oly sw, perhaps an update is needed

Dave,

What program are you using to update the camera FW?

I see you are on a Mac as am I. When I installed Olympus Viewer 2 (came with my E-PL2), Olympus Digital Camera Updater was installed in the Applications folder and that is what I used for updating the FW on the E-PL2.

I also connected my E500 with the various lenses and Camera Updater recognized everything.

HAH!! That was it! The mode appeared selected already, but once I "OK"ed on it, it went to a black screen and then the Updater recognized the camera. Thanks a bunch!!!!

Thanks, Kim -- I followed another posters advice and got it fixed about the time you posted -- and I was using Updater. My problem was although the "Storage" option was highlighted, it hadn't actually been selected via the OK button. Once I did that, it worked like a charm...

Dave, now that your freaking irritating question has been answered, please stop cluttering up this forum. Us budding and experienced photographers like to post about how to use our cameras to get best results, and we're highly annoyed with people posting questions such as yours because they get in the way of us posting all of our photos.

A good friend of mine is a professional photographer with lots of AF Lamp expertise. If it weren't for him being forced to read and respond to your problem in a competely unhelpful way, he surely would've graced us with more fine work from his portfolio. Thanks to you, we're forced to wait again.

Curse Olympus and their customers!

an AF asist lamp I would get rid of it. I don't see how you can run any programs without one.

Another excellent point. I use the heat from my CPU to drive a small steam turbine, which spins a generator that powers my computer's AF Assist Lamp.

After careful consideration of the importance of the AF Assist Lamp in all aspects of life, I've decided to wear a headlamp at all times. If you don't have enough light to focus your own eyes properly, does anything else really matter? I think not. Does wonders for low light photography, too. Anyone want to buy a Panasonic 20? As long as I have batteries on my head, I don't need no stinkin' fast lens.

This is the first time I have heard of an update for the E-pl2. What does it add or fix?

"Olympus has released firmware updates for its E-5 DSLR, E-PL2 Micro Four Thirds camera and XZ-1 enthusiast compact. The latest versions for the E-5 and XZ-1 resolve minor bugs relating to LCD display and external flash units respectively. Version 1.1 for the E-PL2 changes default setting of the image stabilizer to 'On' when used with the add-on Fisheye, Wide-angle or Macro lenses."

The Olympus website says there is no firmware update at this time for the E-PL2.
