It was a hard pick, once again. Reason why I picked these three is:

1st - John Brain: lovely light, perfect exposure and excellent skintones
2nd - Larry Bernman: wonderful colors, great facial expression, livefull picture
3rd - AirBete: funny picture all in all, a cat in a raincoat

I felt there was too many animal pictures, although fun "faces" I had expected to see more humans and that's also a reason why I voted for humans in the top 2 positions while the funniest pet picture got one vote.

This is my first time to vote. Im new to this forum. I really enjoyed the entries and had a tough time picking just 3.

1-Bin, I really like the mood this picture gives off, it makes me wish i was young again. The composition and colors are great. Very nice shot Bin.

2-Larry Berman, Again like Bins shot this pic has that feel to it. The color is very nice. Great work.

3-Gingo, This shot gives off a good feeling, I like the way it is framed. The hands alone could have made some intresting shots. Nice work Gingo.

As usual, so bl* dy difficult when trying to choose three pics from so many fine images.

1-LRP... for me a timeless image, could have been taken decades ago...B&W always grabs my attention...the exposure, pose and neutral background add up to a great picture.

2-Doug...wow, what a face...such character in it...good lighting and pin sharp where it needs to be.

3-Paul...as with LRP's subject, you can't see the eyes, which I feel gives them both an air of mystery...like the sepia effect...the overall softness works very well.

I interpreted the challenge to be more than just portraits - I wanted to see how the faces tell me something about the world in which they exist.

1-Smee-Int

This would seem to be a really challenging picture to capture - in the dark illuminated briefly by a bursting firework - nicely done. I like that there are four faces all transfixed on the explosion. You can see a hint in the windows, but the reflection does not give up the complete story leaving it to the viewers imagination. The picture is reasonably sharp with a little grain to add mood. I like that the firework reflection seems to be near the center of the heads. I also like the pattern of windows in the background. Nice Job.

2-PowerPet

I like the simplicity of this shot and the concentration on the face of the subject. Light, Microphone, person - very simple but it is clear that this person is "on air". I think the subtle reflection of the microphone on the subjects faces makes this one more interesting.

3-Bin

Were it that we all could be entertained by such simple things - This is a great shot - the little girl staring at the pin wheel. The color of her shirt matches the wheel and they both really pop out from the background. I don't like the cropping on this one - her feet are missing, so is a portion of the pin wheel. Had it all been there this would have been my number one. Regardless I still love the simplicity, and the color in this one.

The others were also very good. Doug Barber and Ginko would be 4 and 5, but I wanted to see a little more of the "world" in these pictures" They are great portraits regardless. I hovered around Ginko for quite a while. Sid - is your son whatching TV in your pic - he has that "look".

Great job everyone!
