Kind of off topic I realize but wanted to share with my buddies who have been giving me advice. It's due to arrive between March 18 and 25. I'm excited. Thanks to all of you who gave me advice and suggestions. My final decision: black, 3G, 64G, with black smart cover. I decided to get the most I could as this will be lasting awhile. Can't wait to start figuring it out. I did get on dropbox and have already put up photos of my paintings so I can show them to folks on the iPad. I do have one question about the photos on the iPad. Any way to put them in folders and/or view them in an organized way?

Enjoy. I have the first edition. Love it.

Get a microfiber cloth for your screen.

Ann, there are a number of apps that allow you to do that. Unfortunately, unless you set it up on your main computer and sync in Itunes the native Photo app won't allow you. So I can easily adjust, add, delete, reorder I use Collections and Photosort works pretty well too. This way I can just quickly add a new one via Dropbox, add to Photos, then insert where I want it in Collections.

Just thinking. You will want Goodreader, almost a must have for the Ipad, and you can easily add photos there. Its integrated with Dropbox but since I haven't used it this way not sure about reordering but you can certainly put them in whatever folder you wish quite easily.

I'll ponder this LOL. Have fun with your new Ipad. I love mine--have had it since first week in May and now use my computers quite differently--and more "intimately" too.

You only need just the camera kit. There are 2 small thingies which you insert into the power dock on bottom of Ipad. One is for SD cards and the other is to use for cameras like my 5D that use other cards. I use the mini USB for the camera to the insert and it works the same. I mostly use the SD since I shoot mostly with my m4/3s. You just stick in your SD card in one end, the male end into the female power port on the bottom of the Ipad. It uploads files automatically.

Hi Ann

Congratulations!

The standard Photo app on the iPad 1 arranges the photos in albums or events or you can view all the photos together.

Albums that I have are "Saved Photos" and "All Imported" - these were created by default.

Events are by default separate folders for each date.

Hope this helps.

does this thing have a usb port included??
No, you have to buy the camera kit which has two little attachments one for an SD card and one for a usb port. Each plugs into the iPad port. The camera kit is about $29. You can import both raw and jpeg files.

Congrats! Looking into getting one myself but wanted to see it in person first. Post some pics and if you can let us know what you think about it.

The Dock Connector Port is essentially a USB port on steroids. It connects to audio, video and power circuitry. You buy adaptors for features/uses you want and will actually use instead of having the thing festooned with ports you'll never use. it can use ANY device designed for iPods, iPhones, etc. There are several available.

There's the Camera Connection Kit, as mentioned by others. I've found a Chinese Dock adaptor that has the SD card slot, USB port and charging abilities all in ONE unit.
VGA out.
HDMI out.
Line-Out Audio, for high quality sound, Lossless recordings.
Analogue Audio/Video out.
Electronic control devices.
Credit Card readers, etcetera.

You can use Bluetooth keyboards and audio devcies.
The headphone jack doubles a microphone jack for plug-in headsets.
It can be used as an extra computer display or to control computers, TVs, etc..

I use screen sharing on it to control my Mac, including trackpad and keyboard.

The lack of a "real" USB port is a deal-breaker, huh? ;-)

Congratulations! You will LOVE it! :-)

When you plug in the Camera Connection Kit (I've only used the SD Card reader), the Apple Photo app is launched and asks if you'd like to download you photos. It will give you the option to skip photos already downloaded.

You can sync it with iPhoto on your Mac, or not.

I used it in Costa Rice in January and downloaded image files every day to look at and emailed a few.. This was pre-GH2 and giant files.

Photogene is a highly rated editing app.
LightLoupe that has histograms and such.
PhotoRAW does RAW files.
There are a bunch of photo technique apps. You'll just have to look. for them.
B&H Photo even has an iPhone app.

Check out Terry White's Best App Site for a list of photography apps. He's a pro photographer, Mac and iOS blogger.

Evernote is an excellent free app that lets you take notes and sync with iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC or any browser. I use it all the time!

(BTW, I lived in Bellingham a million years ago... J Street, Grant Street and Euclid Avenue! Worked at Uniflite and Mt. Baker Plywood. Climbed Mt. Shuksan and the Twin Sisters, too!)

Congrats, Ann - I'm sure you'll love it. I picked one up today, and it's great! I can't say it feels lightning fast in relation to the original, but it's a more pleasing shape. I can't say I nice it being a lot lighter, but it feels just right.

So far, I'm not sure I'm really sold on the new cover. It's clever, for sure, but I find it awkward to use in "keyboard" orientation since I'm typically using it on my lap at the end of the day, and in this case its a lot less stable than the original case.

Anyway - enjoy!

Cool, me too for my wife's birthday (we already have the 1 and she needs the 3g for work). So 32 gb, 3g, blue cover, camera connection kit, and dock.

Still not as fun as a new camera, but very nice. And I suppose it's a camera too...

Congrats on your new iPad! I have a photo/portfolio tip. When you put your photos in order separate the horizontals form the verticals. THat way you don't have to keep flipping the iPad (or viewing them in the wrong orientation and not full screen) around when you show you portfolio.

I thought of going to the store but had a really full day so opted for the online purchase. Enjoy. Which color cover did you get?
I went for the Gray Polyurethane cover since they didnt have any of the dark leather ones. It'll definitey be interesting to see what other manufacturers come up with using the magnets - it hods a lot of promise I'm not sure is fully realized with Apple's cover,
