Hi all,

Great to see so much help online. I know I'm crazy!! But what online dealer would provide the best chance to actually get a 1Ds? Reputable and yet competitively priced? So much rumor about availability. I would really like one and would preorder but with who. At present I am considering Big Apple Photo. Any comments? Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the reply. I have read that thread. I am very interested in what online dealer to preorder from. Haven't made many such purchases. Who would represent the 5 largest? Is Paul Pope very knowledgeable? Sorry for my naivete'.

Paul, while very opinionated, generally knows what he is saying.

I do know that my local store has 10 on the waiting list right now.

good luck

One thin you need to forget quickly about is the 'competitively priced' thing.

As far as ordering from a good place i would either use Canoga Cameras (canogacameras.com) ask for Greg Noble or B&H (bhphoto.com)

A man at last nite's camera meeting as one on order from a local shop. They required a deposit from him.... the shop said that Canon will only fill wholesale orders that have deposits.

I have been buying my camera equipment from Allen's Camera in Levittown PA, 215-547-2841. No online store :-(. Knowledgable staff, big inventory, no pressure, good prices (often slightly better than B&H, sometimes a bit more, sometimes a lot less). The only downside is that he seems to be pretty popular and his waiting lists might be a bit long. He should have a pretty good price on the 1Ds though -- worth a call.

I suggest checking your local shops, try to get on a wait list.
For some people this is a great idea. For many, we don't have a decent local shop. The stores where I live all charge full retail and don't stock anything I want anyway. So if I can't handle it first, they often don't have any idea what I'm talking about, try to sell me cheesy filters and a 28-300 Phoenix lens with it, and they charge 30% more, I think I'll order by phone/net.

Sorry, hot button for me. I dearly wish I had a good local shop -- I'd pay more from them, so it isn't like price is the end-all.

If you ask around I think you will find that Greg Noble over at Canoga Camera is probably on of the best dealers around. He is taking pre-orders for the camera, and will be able to give you a very competitive price. Let him know that I sent you his way. http://www.canogacamera.com .

First let me say that I have nothing against Canoga. As a matter of fact, I like them, have ordered from them, and will order from them in the future. They have always been quite helpful.

HOWEVER, if you look back at some of the threads dealing with the D60 introduction, there was a LOT of bad blood between the customers and them and their handling of that situation. I know this because I was one of the early people to receive my D60 (since March) and was anxiously watching and waiting. In addition, it appeared that Canoga's allocations of D60s were substantially below what they said they were going to receive. Lot's of people had high hopes because of the huge quantities they were promising to deliver and it didn't materialize. There must have been dozens of threads on the topic if you search.

In their defense, perhaps they didn't have much control over the allocations but they COULD have handled the PR side of it better. There were LOTS of angry people on their lists. Also, I am sure that the waiting lists for the 1Ds will be MUCH smaller than the D60 so perhaps all will work out well.

Anyway, my point is that if the introduction of the 1Ds is anything like the D60 it seemed like the Canada dealers had the cameras in quantity well before the US dealers (which still don't seem to have many...)

Your mileage may vary ;)

Good luck!

Mark
