Faking Snow

Hi Marlene,

I really enjoy your postings and images.

That "Frosty" effect is lovely, but isn't in my Photoshop 7 either, at least not in the Filter> stylize menu. I checked in "Help", but no mention of it there either.

Perhaps it's available somewhere as an action.

If ya 'll would like to make falling snow try this.

1. Duplicate layer.
2. Pointillize > Cell size > 6.
3. Threshold > Level > 255.
4. Layer mode > Screen
5. Motion blur > Angle -45 > Distance > 13.

Hope this is what you are looking for.

David

Hi David,

Your method works really well. Thanks!

I also used it in conjunction with one of the Snow actions from the site I mentioned a few minutes ago. The combination is very effective.

Thanks Donna,

I went to the site you mentioned and downloaded the actions. I' ll take a stab at them later.
Thanks for the tip.

My apologies regarding the Frosty 1.0 Plugin. It does not come with the standard filters in Photoshop. I had apparantly downloaded it some time ago (I've been working with Photoshop for 6 or 7 years). There is now a 2.0 version that I found (free) for the Mac (my OS). Not sure if it will work in Windows but you could give it a try. Once put into your PlugIns folder it will be accessed through Filters> Noise. You can download it here:

Let me know if it works on your PC.

Here's a free PC plugin called Snowflakes.

Best if used in different sizes on different layers - not good if used "straight out of the can."

Since I started this thread and suggested a plugin that no one has, I decided I would try and figure this out without the use of a plugin. Here's what I came up with and I think it's better than the plugin.

Open Image
Duplicate (just something I do)
New Layer
On the new blank layer Fill> 50% Gray
Filter> Noise> Add Noise> around 25%

Adjust> Levels you can do to taste depending on how much snow you want but I would suggested trying at 200 1.00 2.30, you can also just drag the left slider over to the extreme right (you'll see what it's doing) OK
Change Blend Mode to Screen

Filter> Blur> Motion Blur an angle looks more realistic so something around 45% Distance> use a low number light 1, 2, or 3 If you go up towards 8 then it looks like sleet or a hard rain, also a nice effect.

Remember, you are working on the new layer through this process.

I think that's it, as I can best read my notes. I did create an action for this. So if you have a problem, I can email you the action.

Hope this works for you, I spent my "Happy Hour" working on this :)

David Vance:

Thanks, so far I have done the following and have encountered problems on the lines with the question marks because I am not sure what you mean. I have PS7 and have used the index, but I cannot find what you are referring to. If I leave out the question marked lines I am pretty close to Maureen's frosty style. I would like to get your bigger flakes if possible. I am very new and trying here:
1. Image> Duplicate
2. Filter> Pixelate> Pointillize > Cell size _ 6. 3
3. Filter> Noise> Add Noise> Amount: Level _ 255 ????
4. Layer mode > Screen ????
5. Filter> blur > Motion: Angle = 45 / Distance = 13.
Thank you for any assistance.

David:

I am sorry to bother you but or could someone else help? I have done the following but where the question marks are I am lost I cannot find the info on the screen. If I skip those steps I do get some snow but not like yours. I am using PS7 thanks for any help you can give me.

1. Image> Duplicate
2. Filter> Pixelate> Pointillize > Cell size _ 6. 3
3. Filter> Noise> Add Noise> Amount: Level _ 255 ????
4. Layer mode > Screen ????
5. Filter> blur > Motion: Angle = 45 / Distance = 13.

Thank you for any assistance.

Bob,

3. The amount of noise you apply is 255, there should be a slider.....slide it to the right and you will see a box display the amount as you slide or just highlight the box and type in 255.

4. Layer Mode> Screen....towards the top left of your layer palette you should see a box with the word "normal" in it.....click on that and scroll down to "screen" to select screen.

For the gentleman who was confused with his explanation here it is

Duplicate Layer
go to Pixelate / Pointillize set cell at 6

Go to Image / adjustment/ Threshold ( you have to fool with level adjustment depending on picture coloration)
ON your layers Pallette change mode to Screen
Go to Blur select motion blur set at Angle 45 - Dostance 13

See the results. You can adjust the amount of snow falling

Thanks David

Ok I have tried hawks Plug ins.

Snoflake is awsome. combined with your original Marlene it works great.

The same place has something call snowscape and I will leave t up to you of how it looks. I think with caution it can help with the other two.

The thing that I like about snowflake is the size of the flake can be varried and the amount of falling is adjustable. But see for you self.

Hello All,

Since I was one of those who couldn't download Bijan's Snow action, I emailed him asking for the steps. He emailed me back and I will share his response:

Hi Marlene

Sorry for the delay. I have been very busy with work.
I just tried to log on to dpreview and it wouldn't let
me log in with my user id anymore. I tried
reregistering but still no luck. So I can't post the
snow action structions yet. But I will write it for u
and u can pass it on the forum.
Here it is:
make adjustment layer
using adjustment layer
type: channel mixer
with Monochromatic
Red -30%
Green 200%
blue -70%
Select backgroung
select green channel
gaussian blur 10 pixels (depends on how big the image
is)
Edit --> fade 25% Mode: screen
select layer "channel mixer 1"
set current layer to layer, mode: pin light

that's it.
Remember that you have to have some greens in your
image to have snow effect.

Here is a sample of one of the snow actions I created. I'm putting
together a package of various amounts of snowfall for both vertical
and horizontal images for myself, but willing to share when
complete.

Hello Marlene,

I just want to compliment you on your "Snow Effect". It is a pleaseure to view an image that has been enhanced by the proper additions of selected effects -- and ALL without "deforming" the beauty already present in the scene that was provided by "mother" nature. VERY VERY NICE....

Where do I find the last step listed "set current layer to layer, mode: pin light". I have even done a search for "pin light" in the Windows version of PS 6 and it found nothing!
Thanks for any help anyone can give.
