I was just reading nikonrumors latest rumor about the replacement D700 will have the popup flash removed. Could this be true? I have a SB-400 & SB-900 but still regularly use the built-in flash.

I hope Nikon does NOT do this! What's your thoughts?

One more reason to keep my D700! The BIF provides the command mode, and it actually provides flash when I haven't a pocket for the SB900. Humping the D3s plus the SB-900 can be quite a load on the shoulder!

--Since SB700 has a Ratio settings like SU800 by removing build in flash from next bory they will boost sale of SB700 from a company stand point it makes sens and since they can market this as a PRO build body requaiermants whay not. Some users now get one SB700 and after body with out a flash you need 2. Instant incrase of bottom line.

favor of the change. Although the pop-up flash is quite nice as a remote commander, viewfinder quality and comfort is one of my top priorities. It was the reason I skipped a D300 in favor of a used D2x, and passed on a pristine D700 in favor of a high-shutter count D3.

I love having an onboard flash for those times when I need some fill and don't happen to be packing a big flash.

It's fast and does a great job if you know it's limitations.

I shot two entire weddings with just a pop-up flash!! And my clients absolutely loved my work.

THANKS! :p

Keep Flash, why change(minus from) a winning feature list, ADD to it.

That is what I LOVE about the D700 ... that ability to trigger CLS Flashes from the PopUP flash.
YES, it is my MOST used popUP flash feature.

imho, that would have all the older CLS Flash users (sb900,sb800) holding on to there D700 a little longer. (not a good thing for the Nikon D800 roll out)
Because for most things, the D700 is all you need.
  • The D800 needs to be a compelling "Volume Sales" Classic in this ~ us$2,500 pricepoint.
Now if the D800 is Radio triggering the New CLS flashes (in body) that might be different. and a positive move forward.
and it would solve that D700 / sb900 Hot Shoe issue (probably).

The "other" thing on that list that does NOT make sense (based on the prosumers APS Nikons shipping with 100% VF and two card slots)
That a PRO D800 would be LESS than 100% VF , that would be crazy.
Sooooo many consumer cams are at 100% VF now, and growing.
  • I like the FF Mirrorless PRO camera rumor.
with a Fast Wide sharp pancake Nano Lens at faster than f2 ... would be a dream.
Have a feeling I am not going to be thrilled about the price. :)

Please feel free to criticize, make suggestions, and edit any of my photos & re-post, to help show me 'the way'. * I am trying to Elevate the Level of my 'Snap Shots' :)

Onboard flash is a very important feature and it always comes in handy when we needed it.

Please get rid of it. I've never used it and it causes two problems:
1) Makes prism stick forward interfering with tilt/shift lenses.
2) Less than 100% viewfinder.

It may not cause #2 but that's been suggested numerous places.

I think it has no place on pro-grade cameras.

If they take it off that will really tempt me to upgrade, even though I only bought the D700 a couple of months ago.

Totally agree. I find myself using the pop-up on the D700 as a nice little fill in a LOT of situations.

But it's very odd that they use a flash as the source of the infrared signal.

It could just as easily have been an infrared LED instead.

...so the prism housing doesn't interfere with shift lenses.
Anyone have an example of this in action? How much interference are we talking about?

It looks like people are referring to the shift knob, but I haven't had one in my hands to see it in person. Any chance an aftermarket knob could alleviate it?

The rumor I heard is that Nikon will go full steam into the 3D direction. The D800 will have two sensors, two lenses and two flash units for 3D imaging.
That should scare Canon a lot.

None of my cameras have pop up flash.. D2Xs, D3, D2H, F5 ....

Some of my friends were laughing about my pop up flash. They said it looks like amateur-ish to have a pop flash. So i showed them what the pop flash can do in one of my engagement sessions

Flashes were triggered by RadioPopper attached to SG-IR http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/410445-REG/Nikon_4905_SG_3IR_IR_Panel_for.html/ so that i can trigger my 2 SB900s even they are not in line of sight. I still didnt impress them but when i say that i can adjust individual flash output in camera and without physically going to the flash. They were like...ohhh thats neat LOL

If true the removal of the PUF will create a large hole inside the body due to the removal of the not insignificantly sized capacitor. This space could be used for example to include two processors, similar to that which Canon has been trying recently
