It’s time to say goodbye

That's a beautiful, Italian Belcanto style tune, I thought about same song when i saw the title of the thread.

Richard , enjoy your new camera! but you still can come here, because you told me :my photo is good (in landscape thread)-here I should insert the smiley face, but i don't have it....Cheers, Larry

I too am making the switch to Nikon for the exact same reason.

While I really think that the Axx cameras look excellent, they are simply not for me. Call me old-fashioned, but for now I prefer the optical viewfinder.

Also, I find the lack of a proper midrange camera in the Sony line-up frustrating. I know that it will come and I am sure it will be excellent - but sans optical viewfinder.

I was fortunate enough to be able to buy a really cheap, used Nikon D300 body + lens. I'll sell the body and get a D90 instead. And later I'll probably be able to get a cheap, used D7000 body from the same source.

I'll sell my Sony equipment and get a couple of lenses for the Nikon (I already sold my Olympus E-400).

The grass isn't greener with Nikon - it's just the type of grass I prefer.
Sony, Olympus, Nikon - I bet that you will be a Canon owner buy the end of the year. - TF

Just curious. Most people who are dedicated to using OVFs seem to be much older.

I think people who like EVFs understand that not only will they continue to get better, but they are capable of so much more than just a clear image that is different that what the sensor will output.
I'm 65 and think, all things considered, EVF's are great despite the fact I started using SLRs back in the 60's. It's more about being open to new ideas than age. Some people like what they like and that's it. Others like myself are more open to new ideas. To each his own.

I am not sure why everyone takes it that way.

It is an observation that older people tend to like OVFs.
I'm 47 so it must be true :-)

Congratulaltions on your decision. While I'm not adverse to SLT and EVF, I will try to wait until A77 to see what it holds. Thinking objectively and independently is a great thing, I applaud you. Enjoy your Nikon!

Yes. It appears that sony have a solution which is better than traditional DSLR, imagine that. Nevertheless, fortunately for people who don't want to improve their photography, traditional OVF DSLRs will continue to be offered by canon, nikon and pentax.
Appears to who? YOU? lol.

And you claim you're not a troll.

Sony owns the patent to SLT, so will prevent other brands doing that. Meaning that the future is elsewhere.

As usual, a fanboy tries to stifle discussion with a personal attack.

Its what makes the Sony forum what it is. When will you wake up and realize its not Walt ruining this forum. Its you.

As you see, he was not hammered. If more people switched brand instead of constantly whining for the rest of their lives, these forums would be much nicer place. I hope you, walt and the rest would follow Richard and buy the camera that you want.
As Richard stated he could move because his investment is small. Buying a camera body is the cheapest part of a high end system by a very long ways.

And it's the near and far future with Sony that disappoints, today, and until they wear out the a700 is a excellent camera, as is the large, carefully selected A mount system I have.

Life is a heck of a lot longer than you think too.

Walt
Yes Walt, you have the best camera, the largest and best system in the world. Congratulation! So now stop complaining and moaning. You have all what you need for your excellent photography work.

boo hoo. by which time your kit will be worth even less and prices of new kit will be even higher. the smart move would be to switch systems now. in fact, an even smarter move would have been to stop investing in a system when oneself had already predicted its demise, but that's what an intelligent, knowledgeable, person would have done

Do you never tire of making these types of statement with no, nada, zero, factual support?

Show us the financial analysis that led to your latest genius statement. Don't forget the depreciation while Walt continues to use his A700 system.

So until you can demonstrate why this is a "smart" move, it will just be another "dumb" comment.

I really just don't understand why what I post bugs you so much. I'm merely paraphrasing the interview with Mark Weir:

"With the technology platforms that we have and that we've introduced in 2010, we believe that we'll be able to move forward and develop a mid-class model -- an enthusiast model -- which will offer new advantages and new technologies that are not available on the market today . You know, we absolutely understand and value the point about the continuity that an interim A700 successor model would have offered, but we prioritized the development of new capabilities, new benefits, and new technologies such that the A700 successor will be a truly unique and revolutionary product ."

Is he a troll too? Is anyone who sees potential in the future a troll? Could it possibly be that with your consistent record of one-liner aggressive posts that YOU are trolling here, not me ?

I'm not saying this is truth, clearly sony may be over-hyping. That's why I used the words "It appears" as opposed to "it is the case that". But I'm not making this stufff up, it's straight from sony. Have a go at them. Write a postcard with troll written on it. Go and have a ball.

Agreed, the A580 is a very good camera. I could likely live with the pentamirror viewfinder for a while, but per my previous post, I doubt Sony's long term commitment to OVF.
The a580 is likely the last DSLR out of Sony if they continue on anything like their current path.

Sony has produced a great APS-C sensor in the 16MP, so its especially frustrating that they haven’t made the sensor available in an high end APS body. I would have been pretty happy if Sony had offered a sensor upgrade program e.g. the new 16MP in my A700 body for, say, $500.
Good luck with Nikon. At one point, you might end up with the same problem when PDAF on sensor have become the norm and the mirror is suddenly in the way. But the stability of the entusiast segment is currently better with Nikon, and I understand you would like that.

Personally I haven't got the time to really use my camera, and because of that I don't mind waiting.

Hey, Richard, best of luck to you. Nikon's always a pretty safe bet, and the most important thing is that you have equipment that best serves your needs. You'll always miss something from what you had before, but if there was a camera that combined the best of everything, ... well, then there might only be one camera. I hope you enjoy your new gear, and for my part you're always welcome to share images.

It’s been a great ride with Minolta and Sony. I got back into photography after a fairly long break with the Minolta S404, then the A1, the KM 5D and then the A700. I have have fond memories of those cameras and the great results they gave. I tried the A55, but it is not for me. The viewfinder and autofocus just don’t work well enough in the situations I need them to work. I don’t know if it’s my sample of the CZ16-80 or some interaction with the SLT design, but I have seen increased CA and in areas I wouldn’t expect to see it, such low contrast areas in landscape photographs.

Sony has produced a great APS-C sensor in the 16MP, so its especially frustrating that they haven’t made the sensor available in an high end APS body. I would have been pretty happy if Sony had offered a sensor upgrade program e.g. the new 16MP in my A700 body for, say, $500.

From everything I have read, it appears Sony is moving aggressively to EVF, so I am switching brands to Nikon in the hope that I can find a stronger commitment to OVF with that brand. I am fortunate that I don’t have a huge investment in alpha mount glass, so switching brands is feasible for me. I did consider Sony FF, but switching to FF would be substantially more expensive and I just didn’t want the added weight of a FF system.

You seem to know what you want and you are going to go get it. I have respect for that. Good luck with Nikon, they have a great system. The dark side beckons :-)

Hi Richard,

I wish you well with your new system. The high cost of Nikon has so far scared me away. The Sony A900 cost $3000 vs Nikon equivalent $8000.

This thread went where you would expect it to go. Let me sum it up...

yep, pretty much describes the sony forum - as it was before i joined, as it is now and as it will be after i go (which saddo, i wonder is going to be first with "close the door on the way out"?) the moderators clearly have no interest in keeping the place civilised - fixing the complain button would be a good start, though
