It isn't a disease, it's an awakening..
I find myself in a strange way these days. Everywhere I go, I find
myself looking at things very differently. It's like I'm in
constant hunt for a photograph through my eyes. DO you find
yourself doing this ? It's like a disease... really !! :-)

Hah ! Well, for one thing - thanks for starting a thread that doesn't have to do with F717 problems as an indication of the decline of civilization ;)

Yeah, I can sympathize completely ... I've probably sapped the fun out of a couple of vacations by spending too long taking pictures. I had to promise my wife I'd "separate" my "serious" photography from regular "life" ... so on vacations and trips, I take a single SLR, flash unit and midrange zoom ... in the future, that may be replaced by the F717 - we'll see.

It's a blessing and a curse ! When I don't have my camera with me, I wish I did (though I leave it behind intentionally so I'm not tempted to stop and take pictures all the time and be late for everything ... ) yet the fact that I'm nearly always looking at everything as a photographer - admiring how light falls on the landscape - makes me appreciate being on this earth and able to see just that much more. And I believe that even thinking about how I would take photos of something; whether the lighting would make a good image; whether I'd need a GND filter, etc. helps me when I actually do get out with a camera.

One of the reasons for buying the F717 - in addition to "new baby" photos - is to have a capable camera I can carry with me most everywhere I go ... so maybe I will start being late for work from time to time. The camera is going back to Sony today, so in another week or so, I'll start carrying it with me along with a lightweight tripod & see how that works out.

MarkJ,

On the one hand, everywhere I look I am always thinking, "What, if any, perspective of this scene would make a great photo." I find myself always thinking about it, and it consumes a lot of time and mental energy (note, this is not a complaint). But on the other hand, I think I always just kind of rode through life (in all of its hecticness) not paying much attention to the incredible, beautiful scenery all around me. Since taking up photography as a hobby, I see so much more beauty in the everyday world, and it really only came with starting to think like a photographer. For example, I never thought about the beauty of "light" itself, but I do now. Photography has greatly enriched my life and my view of the beauty of the world around me.

All in all, photography has made my life richer for I see so much more in it. Regardless of how much my hobby costs me over my lifetime, it will never match how much "added value" it has given to my life.

Regards,
Mike
Humorous story, then serious subject.....

I was asked to bring a few of my photographs to a friends house who
wanted to show them to someone. I hate doing that and was reluctant
but, I caved in a brought over three photos. We then drove to her
friends house, where just before dinner was being served, my friend
was showing the three photos. The response was an interesting
one......

wow these photos are great, you must have a great camera!

Well, after dinner and, on the way out the door when we were
leaving, my girldfirend says.....

the food was delicious....... those must be great pots and pans
you have!!

he he

Ok, on a serious note:
I was walking on the pier at the beach and a woman stopped and
looked at my weird looking F717. She immediately asked me.... are
you a photographer ? I told her I live and breathe with this
camera and yes, sometimes I'm a photographer.

I find myself in a strange way these days. Everywhere I go, I find
myself looking at things very differently. It's like I'm in
constant hunt for a photograph through my eyes. DO you find
yourself doing this ? It's like a disease... really !! :-) I
find myself doing this while I drive, when I walk, when I'm in
someone else's car as a passenger, when I'm simply walking in the
parking lot to my car after leaving a store shopping.... this is
getting out of hand... it's nuts! lol Is there a cure ? :-)

Sometimes it's really annoying to others. I was a the zoo last week
and my lady friend complained I was taking too long to walk through
the zoo. Then she complained I was taking too many photos of each
animal. Then she complained it was too hot out. Then she
complained I wasn't holding her hand enough while we walked. Ok, so
the zoo trip got out of hand. lol
Lesson.... NEVER take anyone with you on a photo shoot.... never! :-)

But nobody ever says "you must have a great camera"...they say "Wow! These are digital?" Which irks me, but I retain my good humor and say "yes, would you like to check out the camera?" so I let they play with my camera, and bite my nails down to stubs! Topped it all when my photography teacher handed it back saying "Wow, that's almost like a normal camera, isn't it?!" I guess we aren't digital photographers or digital imagers, we are abnormal photographers!

A classmate explained it to me the other day..."It's not that we doubt your artistry, Sarah, but digital is stigmatized. The first thing that comes to mind when I think digital is soccer moms and dads with low resolution photos that they send to grandma."...which is all well and good I suppose.

About the "photographic eye"...I am afflicted. I got excited the other day about some curly seed pods hanging down over an iron railing on a sidewalk....That would make a great photo!!! The people I was with just looked at me...Day before yesterday I repeatedly got the question "why is your hair full of leaves?" when I tried to explain that I had been on the ground for a photo I got more blank stares. Luckily, the people here and the people in my photo class usually understand, which helps a lot. Oh well, people don't laugh when they see the photos, they say "ooooh!" which always makes me feel warm and fuzzy ;)

I went to a tourist attraction this last weekend.... it's always fun playing tourist in your home state. lol

Well, everybody that caught eye on my weird looking camera, decided I must be some kind of photograprher and, it seemed like every three feet I walked some couple or group of ladies was asking if I would be so kind as to take a photo of them together. DeeDee,

Be sure to go to Pazzo's in Vail. It's the best pizza in Vail (or Cabo). There's also a Pazzo's in Avon near Beaver Creek. Pazzo's has a fun and quite eclectic staff that can often make the dining experience unique.

The Red Lion up towards the ski-hill and the German restaurant just south of the covered bridge are also very good. Remember that Vail is separated into two sections. The West section is LionsHead and the Eest is Vail Village

If the weather conditions are good you should be able to shoot the mountains from several locations as you walk East towards the Bell Tower. Just look for the Christmas Shop (near the international Bridge) and walk East. By the way, after many attempts, I finally got a good shot of the "Children's Fountain" that you will see on your left as you walk towards the Bell Tower.

Shooting the covered bridge (when the lights right) can also be productive.

As mentioned earlier, the views from the top of the ski hill at Vail or Beaver Creek are out of this world. Don't forget the camera if you drive an hour West to Glenwood springs or towards Copper Mountain. Again, the photo op's are magnificent.

Take Care!
Mike (Colorado resident)
LOL Luckily I have been married for a while, so I don't have to
worry about the not getting enough attention routine! hehe That's
a tough one when you are dating. =/

I find myself taking pictures in places I had never thought of
going to before. I see the world differently now, but I have to
admit, I like it! (I must reeeeeeeeeeally be over the edge). hehe

We are planning a trip back to Vail, Colorado in December. Now
skiing has always been my thing. I did not waste my time taking a
camera with me since it would interfere with the steep and the
deep. This trip will be a test of how often I have my F707 on the
moutain! The views from up on top are out of this world. I have
just never captured them with my camera! Actually I used to be the
one they captured in the action shots. It's going to be fun to be
on the other end of the camera this time!

This has been my life for 11 months now. lol Pretty much exactly
as you put it. When I drive with my wife and she sees me
rubbernecking at something her comment "See a good picture, there,
didja?" It is out of hand and completely uncontrollable. I plan
my family events around it...

I can't go out anywhere without my camera. Always. I just wish I
had more time to use it. I take it with me, but most of the time
just wish I had more time to stop.

Today at work was especially painful. We've had a crummy fall, and
the leaves have fallen but the colors never changed. It's been
gray and cold - but today the temps snuck up to 60, and it was the
most beautiful late fall afternoon sun. Unfortunately I'm looking
at it through my office window. I was working on some stuff with
my headphones on and heard the dejay talking about what a beautiful
evening it was (btw, it's pitch black by 5:30 here now, so this was
about 3:30-4:00). Anyway, I looked out my office window and I
could just feel the rush - then the disappointment. I went to the
window and everything was golden. Had my camera been in my office
and not the truck I would have taken a picture from my offce.
Instead, I just stood there yearning to be out. Everything was a
photo.

I dont' know what it is, but lately everything has had more of a
romantic look to it. Maybe it's because I haven't been out
consciously shooting, or because I haven't had time. It's made the
desire all the worse.

Okay, now you got me in the mood..... I'm going to go setup pics in
my office....

I had a similar experience while visisting my old home town this summer. The community was in the midst of celebrating it's 200th birthday with a week long seiries of fun events.

I decided to take in one of the bands that were booked for entertainment one evening and use it as a testbed for the Sony 707 and the HFL-1000 flash which was a recent purchase.

After taking a few pictures early on, individuals and groups of people were approaching me asking if i would take their picture which at the time seemed rather odd to me. As the evening progressed I was approached by the band's promoter and asked if I could get some shots of the performance from ON stage. She said ones showing the audience would be good. It soon dawned on me tht all these people thought I was some kind of pro working for a newpaper or something! This was later confirmed when a young couple asked me when their pictures would be in the paper.

All in all it was a great experience and a fun evening but I doubt that I would have gotten that kind of attention with any other camera. The 707 with the 1000 flash and pocket bouncer DID look awsome.
Well, everybody that caught eye on my weird looking camera, decided
I must be some kind of photograprher and, it seemed like every
