Fair comparation (IMHO). It may help someone else too.

I still hesitate, wich lens suits best for my D60.
Canon EF 28-135/3.5 IS
Sigma 15-30/3.5 EX DG
Canon EF 28-80 or 200/3.5 USM

Till that I'm using a cheapoo 35-80/4 of my old EOS1000.

The 1,6X FOV is a pain on the wide side :-(

but I would dump that 35-80 in a heart beat!!! Canon does not make a good 35 -- to anything. I would recommend the following lens so that you can start to see what you D60 can really do!!!

1. 28 - 105
2. 24 - 85
3. 28- 135 IS (need to get a good copy).

you're in for a BIG shock when you get some decent glass! the 35-80 is even worse than the 35-135USM and that is total pants

any of the lenses you list are infinately better, it will seem like you took a filter covered in grease off the lens..

I don't know your budget, or requirements but have a look at these

Sigma 28-70EX DF f2.8 - lot of talk about Sigmas lately - £300 buys you the next best thing to a 28-70L IMO - downers are slow noisy AF motor and awkward AF/MF action.

Sigma 15-30 EX DG - £500 - many have said better than the £1400 16-35L except for flare

Canon 28-105, - £225 - what I'd consider the bare minimum on a Dxx, the Sigma is so much worth the extra £75 you won't believe it

Canon 50mm f1.8 Prime Mk2 - £79 - the best value lens on the planet - L-Quality optics and toyish build at toy prices

Canon 28-135IS - £349 - great range, great build, useful IS, slowest focussing Ring USM lens out there :( . also a lot of copies are known to underexpose on these cameras and aren't too good at AF in low light - get a good one (which isn't soft at 28mm) and doesn't under expose and you'll be happy as hell ..

Canon 24-85 - £399 - needs stopping down to f5.6-6.7 to perform but then it really DOES perform, a real fair weather lens but fast AF and with great contrast and colour..

Great Value used Glass

28-70L - £700? - (when the 24-70L comes out)

28-70 AFD f3.5-4.5 - £50 to £100 - IMO a better lens wide open than the 24-85, can Overexpose at the wide end and is 13-15 years old but excellent
80-200L - great Telezoom at consumer prices - hard to find
100-300L - ditto but cheaper
50mm Mk1 f1.8 prime - f1.4 build and metal mount at Mk2 new prices or a bit more
100mm Macro - rare used but well worth searching out

Tokina 20-35 f3.5-4.5 - far better than the 19-35 which succeeded it, also it's metal, tough and performs about equally to the current Canon of the same spec - likewise it needs stopping down a bit to get sharp, but who cares for £125!!

I (largely) concur with Adam's list:

Prime:
1. 50mm 1.4: My favorite lens. Period.
2. 35mm f2: Close to what a 'normal' lens used to be....
3. 100mm f2.
4. Something wide.

And/Or

Zooms:

1. 28-70 2.8: Either a used Canon L or the Sigma/Tokina. I got my 2.8 used for about 800.
2. 70-200 2.8: Sigma.
3. Something wide: Tokina or Sigma, in the 16-40mm range.

Budget, thats why I put the 28-105 at the top of the list. This will give him a useful range that he is already use to. He can then add some primes and maybe even "L" glass in the future.

In any event, your list is very good indeed and right on target.
