FZ100: Has Panasonic Dropped the Ball with CMOS?

I think this thread has outlived it's usefulness. There is no need for any of us to convince others that a given camera is better, or worse, than another. That is why the market is so large - one can pick and choose the equipment that suits best. No need to convince me - buy the one you like which fits your needs. Thank goodness there is so much choice.........

POGO was right !
Well said and fantastic pic's LT

Awe man...I was just beginning to have fun...oh well I need to go for a run anyway...

Thanks for the kind word SD...sooner or later I am going to get a Hawk in my sights that was a great shot! We are headed to Arizona/California just after Christmas hoping to get some bird shots then...thanks for the input everyone it gives me some food for thought and also helps me learn how to be a photog...a few more years and I should be able to remember to change the in camera settings properly and checking the metering prior to shooting...lol...

The image quality of the FZ100 is clearly a lot worse than that of the FZ35.
Someone just started a thread about a hang glider in Rio de Janeiro, with FZ100 photos. The sky has so much noise I would be very disappointed in those if I had taken them.

I have seen some FZ100 shots I thought looked pretty good, but some which did not. It may be the perfect camera for some people but it depends how hard you want to look at the photos, and how large you plan to print or view them I guess.

really? maybe you should not be participating in this thread then. some users are reporting the amount of smudging not seen even in cheap compacts, it's a concern.

Once again your comparisons will be very helpful. I look forward to them. I especially anticipate the best of the FZ100 being tested and commented on. I only have sample shots to work with, not those taken under the controlled care of a camera owner.

Please don't be rude Juri...I think it was meant in a kind context with a little wisdom attached for us younger guys...Harveydad is 80 yrs young...he has some photos out of P&S compacts that are phenomenal!

I c. Didn't know that context about Harveydad! Great then.

I am going to stick some of the FZ100 photos up on my HDTV when I get home to further understand what you are saying...they look very good on my 25" HD Desktop...and I will print some at 8X10 also to evaluate with some 7D 8X10's I have made prior...

There is definitely some fault in the image resource shots as the HS10 looks terrible in IQ against the FZ100 and we know thats not completely true on the House Poster for sure...
Any luck with printing? As an alternative, you can print a part of the picture [say, a quarter] on 5x7 paper for example to simulate the full picture on 10x14.

My apologies Juri, maybe I didn;t mention that I am still in West Africa...will be home Friday in Texas...will definitely print then and post results...I am very interested myself! Sounds like fun, I had also loaded up on 8X10 High Gloss Paper and Ink last time I was home so it should be easy to do with my Amazon special Canon MX860 printer that I gave $102 for...lol...can't beat it (well the price anyway)

The image quality from the FZ100 does not resolve enough to play properly on an HDTV. For many other cameras this past year, they have at least been able to slideshow well, to the point where I'd not be surprised if they were intended to do so. But of the CMOS designs the FZ100 is the poorest.
... and HDTV is only 2MP. Not so good then...

How was your African trip? Did you have any chance to print some of your photos large?

People often think that if HDTV is only 2MP any still camera, and especially DSLR one, should have superb video quality, but it's not true. Real video resolution is much lower than full HD, 720 video of some cameras is better than some 1080

Had internet problems ALL day finally resorted to getting a Dongle from Verizon...and yes the 8X10 photo with my children on the beach turned out great!!!! My wife also loved it...no problems with 8X10's at all Juri...of course I have a 25" HD Screen on my Computer so i knew it couldn't turn out too bad...

We are talking here about displaying STILL pictures on HDTV.

Great! Have you tried anything larger than 8x10? You can prints a quarter of your pic on, say, 5x7 to simulate the look of 10x14 for the full size.

Juri still sorting computer problems, FINALLY got my wireless printer back online...internet still mangled, but Grande Communications coming to sort that out...

On the road in Arkansas right now will try when I get back home time permitting...

Don't forget that the demands of scaling well for HDTV are specific, and do not necessarily equate to print quality or ease of post processing. It's simply the case that some cameras, like the HS10, seem to have been particularly tuned to effective scaling by HDTV's and the simpler computer graphics cards.

Merry Christmas

that would be downscaling for HDTV. pretty much any card would be ok. sharpening and other processing should be output specific (paper, screen, projection etc). i have a couple of books on sharpening for printing.

merry xmas

Juri what is it you require for the printing...I am not sure I quite understand?...had a few more that were slightly better than the first photo

A few birding photos from the FZ100...these were PP'd in Windows Photo Gallery...NR 5 clicks to right...Sharpened 1 click to right...Cropped for composition...THEN I opened and cropped at 100% in Microsoft Paint and saved as jpeg...so these have been cropped twice...
