I sold my XTi to a friend 2 years ago. I want to purchase a CF card for her for Christmas - for a reasonable price. These cards are a bit hard to come by locally now. The local large electronic and photography/camera stores along with Costco stopped selling them. Best Buy has just a few (4), but their cheapest CF card is $170 - she doesn't need the fastest.

I was thinking of getting her 2 - 4G cards vs one 8G because she is in college - and tends to misplace the little things! And I can't afford $60 for one card. :-)

Are these cards being discontinued?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I picked up a Sandisk 4 GB Ultra a couple of months ago at Walmart for $25. You're correct though, they are getting harder and harder to find in stores. Online should be no problem!

Hi Olga,

Thanks for the info - I just ordered a 4G from Amazon for $17 free 2-day shipping (I have their Prime).

My reason for checking locally first is because Annie is returning to college on Sunday and I wanted to give it to her before she left since she is going with her class to do missionary work overseas for 2 weeks before Christmas. However, I can mail it to her and she will still get it before she leaves for her trip.

I hope you are having some fun with your photography. I am trying to add some photography time into my schedule since if I don't - I don't get it! I presently own the Olympus E-620 and E-PL1 along with the LX5. I had to sell my Canon equipment due to the weight. The E-620 and E-PL1 have IS so I don't have to worry about camera shake - I have a very slight problem so I had used mostly the heavier Canon lenses, especially the IS.

Thanks again.

I surely hope they are not being phased out. The XTi and other cameras that only use CF cards are still giving a lot of people great pleasure - and some can't afford to upgrade. I noticed the prices have gone up - and they are definitely in short supply!

This is also my question. I have an XTi as well and went to the store yesterday and they had 2gb cards for €5!! I bought one, but wondered if they were phasing them out and if so, should I buy more or wait as if/when I get a newer camera, this card won't work. What to do? Thanks for your thoughts, Lepewhi

I sure hope not, too. They're still making brand new cameras with CF slots.

I think cameras aimed at more consumer markets have made the switch to SD, so it will probably be harder to find in consumer electronics locations like Best Buy. CF is still heavily used for larger or so-called professional cameras, so it should still be possible to find at dedicated camera stores and, of course, online.

I sure hope you're right, just looks like the newer cameras are using the sd card system. I found a place here where I can buy CF cards for €5 but don't want to do so if it's a dying system like the xd cards used by my old fuji. I know my camera will die at some point and don't want to be left with a bunch of useless cards. Can't afford, don't need, wouldn't know what to do with a 'pro' camera, alas. Lepewhi

I don't think we'll see another rebel with CF, so I'd say buy as many €5 cards as you think you'll need until your camera dies. Unlike good lenses, memory cards shouldn't be viewed as lifelong investment. Even if the format doesn't get abandoned, the cards become obsolete fairly quickly as the sizes get larger and the prices get smaller.

I shudder to think what I spent on my XT's first CF card six years ago, but it was worth it to me then. Even though both new and old camera used CF, size considerations alone meant I had to upgrade memory, as well.

True, but when one has to upgrade one"s camera, there's where the problem is. I'll keep the cards I have and when my camera breaks, I'll go on to the next camera+card system, until they change that too, pity.

More and more entry level DSLRs are using SD cards, and every P&S camera made today uses SD cards. So vendors aren't stocking as many. But you can still find them at online stores, and the prices are very good.

If they ever do stop making them, then there is an easy solution for this too.

There are many "SD to CF card adapters" that are sold very cheaply. Amazon has one for around $20.
