Hey all,

Over the weekend we went over to one of my favorite places... Kings Park Psychiatric Center. It's an abandoned asylum that's easy to walk around. Half of it is actually a state park with the buildings still standing. The other half you're really not supposed to walk around, but on a sunny Saturday afternoon security mostly leaves people alone, unless they are causing trouble of course.

Though I've been there many times, the place is HUGE and there are STILL new areas to find and discover. As someone who likes this type of photography, it's a dream come true. It also makes me want to get to some of the great ones out of state, though I know a lot of them are difficult to explore.

The whole series is here:

... the first 12 shots are from this weekend. Here's some of my favorites all taken with the Leica X1

Let me say too, the X1 is great for this type of shooting. Small and light, good high ISO performance, and small enough to get through holes and into tough to shoot places. The only thing I wish I had brought with me is my small gorilla pod :)

Thanks for looking!

Many young college age photographers go to the KPSH site and do photographic journals. They usually call it Urban Decay. Their work is Up on several web sites, Flickr etc.

Great series Amy - love them all, although 3,4,5 would be my favourites if you forced me toadmit the truth by threatening to make me spend the night in that place.
I think i like 5 because it reminds me of the restrooms where i work,
:-D

all the best,

Congrats!
Love to see not everyone is afraid of burnt highlights, BTW.

Now, as a non native english speaker, I must admit your thread's subject caught me cause I thought "what? Jumping ship after leaving the psych hospital?".

Great pictures, Amy, as always! :-)

I'm planning to visit some friends in NYC next year, sometime in late spring/early summer. Do you think it'd be possible to meet up? I'd love to get a tour around that place! (Also, I'd love to go shooting with you in general! ;-))
Sure! Keep in touch with me via facebook and we'll work out a plan when it gets closer to when you'll actually be here!

Will do! That'd be awesome! :-)

I loved the details captures on the toilet's pain peeling wall. But why do you need the pod? is it for shaken or positioning?

I shoot P for purpose; A for appreciation; S for serenity; M for masterpiece and Leica for life.

Thanks...

The gorilla pod (or any tripod) could have helped with both. There were some areas that were just very dark... in shadows and dark rooms behind boards on the windows. The shoe shot is the perfect example... it is barely acceptable in terms of sharpness because of camera shake. Floor was too dirty to put the camera down on... and there was nothing else to prop it on but my husband's shoe!
