Hello,

I am currently using the 500D which I am very happy with, its a great and very capable little camera.

I do have my eye on the 7D but just wanted to ask peoples general consensus as to when there might be a newer version appearing. 2011/2012? Be a shame to upgrade, only for a new one to pop up a month later.

Also, with the release of the D7000 do you think there could be any price cuts around the corner as well?

Thanks for your help.

Various posts discussing this - conclusions are no update until Fall 2011 at the earliest.

I think this would be a big surprise, given that the 7D is positioned higher than the xxD series and Canon doesn't update the higher end models as frequently. More likely is Fall 2011.

If I already owned an aps-c camera my eyes would be on a full frame body ... Just saying.

The T1i is already a capable camera, and you probably won't need the feature set of the 7D.

I'd get a 5D if I were you.

Well first of all let me say, if the OP does not want a FF camera then by all means go for the 7D.

However, I already own a 7D and I have friends who own a 550D and a 500D ... Honestly, it's nice that I can show off any of the many new features of the 7D while they all go "Ooooh, Aaaah" with envy ... Still I honestly know deep down that I can do without most of these features.

What I would consider an upgrade is a full frame body, for shallow DoF and better tonal transitions in portrait shots, the much cleaner high ISO files are also welcome.

Just my opinion, I never really saw the sense in owning two aps-c cameras before owning a full frame body. If one is primarily a sports/wildlife shooter than I understand ... But for the hobbyist who tries his/her hand at everything, it just doesn't make fiscal sense to me.

I think you're totally jumping to conclusions. The OP provided no details as to what he found limiting about his existing camera or much about the type of photography he was interested in. So without that information, you just assume that a 5DMkII is his best bet? The whole shallow DOF thing is way overplayed and can easily be compensated for with a wide prime. High ISO is a clear advantage, but once again, the differences aren't that great particularly when printing normal sizes and we really don't know how important that is to the OP.

With an infinite budget, I might agree with you as well. However, there are definitely tradeoffs to be made between the top of the line crop camera and a FF and I think I'd want to know more about what's really important to the OP before jumping in with such a quick recommendation. Just saying...

I know, that's why I said it was just my opinion.

Mark's got it wrong. I'd put my money on Fall 2011. ;-)

Now that's a serious load. Er, uh... of nonsense.
You must be a soothsayer.

Not really, it's just a truth you do not want to hear.

I'm sure there are several people who bought the 7D because it's the best value for money currently out there.

Not all 7D owners need or even care about 8 fps or the genius 19 pt AF system. of the 9 7D owners I know in person, 6 of us shoot almost everything with the center point in "One Shot" focus mode.

For people like this, a 550D would have been sufficient ... Now the reason I skipped out on the 550D was simply because of minor things that make or break the package such as the Viewfinder, the joystick controller, the scroll wheel ... You know, basic ergonomics.

Lastly, it may sound like nonsense to you, but 6 out of 10 people who read this post will admit to themselves that there is some truth to it.

Excuse me akin, ahem, but you're missing the point.

YOU don't know if the OP needs MFA.
YOU don't know the OP has EFS lenses he likes.
YOU don't know if the OP is using long lenses and wants the 1.6x factor.
YOU don't know if another $1000. makes a difference or not.

Of course I could go on but...
YOU seem to be making assumptions without basis.

I thought I had already mentioned that this is merely my opinion. The OP didn't give any information, and seeing as I'm not psychic, giving him my opinion is all I can do.

Nikon new camera will not cut the price..these are 2 different cameras..

upgrade would be at the earliest in sep 2011

the price of the camera went down to $1499 for the body only..

now its a bad time because canon has a rebate going on which made the prices jump up...wait until after the rebate has expired and check amazon and BH for good prices..

Is there an echo in here?

How could you possibly know that the OP would be better off with full frame? Nowhere in the post was there any hint of what features or what type of photos were being taken.

You're obviously welcome to your opinion (this is the Internet after all :-)), however, most folks like to have a few facts first before forming one, which is why you might be taking a little heat for your comments.

Actually what you're saying is this is what you would prefer. That certainly doesn't make it true for others. I have a 30D as a backup to my 7D. A FF and crop body totally wouldn't make any sense for me. Don't be so quick to assume what you prefer is what everyone should prefer.

really..you need to upgrade to the top of the line to get the truth..what a statement.

it all depends on his shooting style..and if he is very happy with his 550 camera i would think an upgrade to 7D or 60D would be a great one..

FF is not for everyone and it also has its disadvantages....unless you think oh it has to be a FF or it would be worthless...

if someone has a ford from the 70's and want to get a new car..so in your opinion he should only look into a bently or BMW !!!??..i think a Camry or a Honda would do a great job too
