If you could travel with ONE lens...

That's a tough one. And I'm already in a dilemma over my upcoming trip over which two lenses to take.

On a full frame the 24-105 would be an easy choice. But on a crop.... i'd probably opt for my 12-14 tokina over the 24-105.

But like others.... no way would i travel with one lens. I"m trying to keep it to two. and that's tough enough.

Indeed -- the type of photography you do and how you approach it are central. By the way, I love pics 1 and 3:

As for flower pics, I am really frowing to love the 24 / 1.4L for this purpose:

Canon 5D + 24 / 1.4L @ f/1.4, 1/2500, ISO 100

I've carried way too many lenses around in the past - and putting an album together a month or two ago, it's surprising how many shots were from my little LX2 panasonic (and depressing at the same time...)

next time I travel I'll be taking the most current Samsung NX camera with that 30mm f2 and a small superzoom (panasonic TZ15) - this gives me great range + low light + backup + discipline to try and just use the NX or laziness to just use the TZ15 depending how I feel on the day.

but then again on a recent trip to Japan I don't know if I could have done without the 28-70 and 135L (on 5D) - got some great shots

And Cook Islands last year - the 24-105 did very well

just not sure I can be bothered with the weight anymore - especially on epic trips
If I can only bring one lens travel around the world, I would rather cancel the trip :)
-------excellent :)

Tamron 24-135mm f3.5-5.6: Both good wide angle and decent tele, and optical quality is good through the entire range.

Let's say you're going on a trip around the world. You can bring ONE lens.

Which lens would it be?
As someone who has spent most of the year travelling for fun, I'll dissent from the others and go with an ultrazoom. I love my Sigma 18-250 as a go to general travel lens.

That would be tough. When travelling, I usually photograph landscapes and wildlife, so if I could only bring one lens, it would have to be the 28-300mm L. I could get by with a 24mm prime and a 300mm prime also and get better results for less total weight, but I usually pack all my gear with me. I've paid enough for it, it would kill me to leave it it at home.

Definitely the 24-105 L on the 5D II (as many others on this thread). I usually take two lenses when I travel, so that all I need fits into a small Lowepro bag. See my website if you want to know what the second one is. :)

Funny you ask, I went around the world recently, 18 countries, landscapes to street photography... on a crop camera 7D I only brought the 15-85. I was completely satisfied with my choice. On a FF cam, I would bring the 24-105.

I own the 24LII no, no and I mean NO WAY would I want to be limited to a single focal length on a trip like I just took. No matter if it was even an F 0.5 aperture. Who in their right mind would spend 10 grand on a trip and bring only a 24 or 35? Absolute craziness.

(I did also bring an E-P1 for reach with the Panasonic 45-200, which was adequate for reach the 2% of the time I felt I needed that, smaller and cheaper than the 100-400L, for sure)

No matter what system I use if I have to use one lens thats it.

I have a 28-300 for my 5d2
An 18-200 for my 7D
And a 14-140 for my GH1.

I bring my 5d mark II with 24-105mm and that covers almost everything.

Travelled Europe this summer with an 18-200 on my 50D. Just keep it to f8 outdoors and it takes wonderful holiday pictures. Versatile range and reasonable size. I had the 10-22 and the 17-55 f2.8 with me too, but to be honest I could have left these at home and not noticed. Great travel lens, not the sharpest, but if you want the versatility its a great compromise. Not having to change lenses is a huge plus.
